Cord Blood? Can secondhand smoke effect the cells in cord blood? I'm 5 mths pregnant and pple smoke where I work. I'd like to save the cord blood for my baby. But I heard that secondhand smoke could affect the cord blood. If they don't respect me and my baby, I'm going to call Organization of Safety and Health Association on them. They are the ones that enforce the Clean Indoor Act. Aside from that I was just curious about the effects on secondhand smoke on cord blood.
How do I donate to a public cord blood bank? I am due in about 4 weeks, and have been interested in Cord Blood Banking for research developement purposes. All of the private banks cost to much (insurance will not cover it) and most of the time it is held for your personal use, not to be used for research or to help others in need. I want to donate my baby's cord blood to a public bank (which is free and gets used to help others in need and/or for research). I have come up against a brick wall when trying to find a way to donate as there are no public banks in my area. Does anyone know of a way to donate to a public bank if it is out of your area? If you know of any that are in the central valley of California that would be helpful as well.
What is the best deal on cord blood banking? We're pretty sure we want to bank our baby's cord blood. Any BTDT moms who have already done this? Who is the best? Who should we go with? Any links or advice would be helpful. TIA!
How is cord blood banking done? I'm doing a research paper on cord blood banking. Does anyone know of any websites that describe how cord blood banking is done? Thanks!
Where can I find out about donating cord blood? My husband and I were discussing cord blood banking and came across the idea of donating the blood for use where it is already needed instead of keeping it for personal use that might never be needed. Does anyone know where we can find info on this? Has anyone else done this?
Have you thought about donating the cord blood after your baby was born? My brother in law passed away this past week. He was a kidney transplant recipient. I am currently 19 weeks pregnant and I have never stopped to think about donating the cord blood, that is, until his death and my sisters desire to have any donations go to the "Gift of Life." Do you think it is a good idea?
How many people store Cord Blood Stem Cells? We are thinking of storing our expectant childs stem cells from their cord blood. Does anyone know who prevalent this is, I live in Europe but any numbers for America, Australia etc. would help. I have read quite a bit about it but usually from companies in the market so I am looking to see if there is some credibility to this by seeing how many people do it?
Can anyone recommend a good cord blood bank? We are looking through information for various companies, but there are so many out there, it's difficult to make a decision. Do you have any experience good or bad with any of the Cord Blood Banks in the US?
stem cell created from umbilical cord blood can help muscular dystrophy? as i know, umbilical cord blood can created stem cell that can be cure to many disease. it is because it can combine with other stem cell without problem. so if muscular dystrophy patient (which is do not have dystrophine because their stem cell can't create dystrophine in their body) receive umbilical cord blood stem cell, would the cell develop the dystrophine? if it true, i think it would be great to muscular dystrophy patient like me. sorry if my english was bad.
Did you know cord blood can save lives? Did you know that the ambilical cord blood can save lives of kids with cancer? Why is it not a mandatory question that mothers giving birth get asked? Is it an option anywhere in the world? & how can we let more people know this information? The stem cells taken from the ambilical cord can be grown to help grow what kids need to recover from lukemia. Some older children need twins cord blood, but in most younger childrens cases one is enough as long as it is of the right blood type and covers all the cross matching. We live in australia and it has become obvious to me that it it more well known about with in america, here in australia it is not so well known, i only found out by being in a bad situation and needing to spend time with people whom have children with cancer, this was a huge eye opener to me
do you get charged to donate cord blood? some peoplehave mentioned donating cord blood and i didn't know this was an option and now would like to consider doing this in the future, if you donated your babys cord blood did ou get charged anything for it? I am assuming no and whoever uses it in the future will pay for it.... correct?
What is the difference from Embryonic Stem Cells and Cord Blood Stem Cells? My husband and I currently have 4 children. At each of their births, we chose to have their cord blood collected and their stem cells stored at the Cord Blood Registry facility in Tucson, Arizona. When our first child was born in 1999, many people still did not know about cord blood and stem cells. Our youngest is 12 months old and it seems that more people are aware and interested in stem cell storage/usage. I have wondered a lot about the difference in ESC and the cord blood stem cells collected at birth. There are literally thousands of baby's born daily, why aren't mother's advised and/or given the option to donate their baby's cord blood? It may depend on morals or beliefs of the mother. Even if ESC's are better, shouldn't we still be concerned about saving the stem cells that are in cord blood? Is it a funding issue? I just couldn't waste my kids' cord blood, but #3 did have a small collection of only 29cc's (<1oz.).
Tax Question: Does anyone know if fees paid in connection with Cord Blood banking are tax deductible? Well, it's not ... I don't know how to explain it, what it is is the collection of stem cells from a newborn's umbilical cord. It is saved and stored in a cryogenic type freezer for future use in case of certain types of cancer and other illnesses. My medical expenses did exceed 7.5% of our income last year, and that's why I am enquiring about this, it is almost $2000, and it could improve the outcome of our return :) It's worth a shot. Thanks for trying :)
Does any 1 actually do cord blood banking? They send me these things all the time on cord blood banking, and it's like $20,000 to do it! I could buy a car or even a house for that! Is it really worth it? And does anyone actually do it? Have you or have you heard of anyone who has? If yes, why? To KevtheKat: I said cord-blood banking, not spem banking you dumb-ass!

cord blood? Does anyone know how much it cost to bank cord blood? I am only 12 weeks pregnant but I figured the sooner I know more about it the sooner I can make a decision as to whether or not it is something I want to do and the more time I will have to save money. I know the initial fee will be over $1000 but I want to know how much over and how much the yearly fee will be. If you have banked cord blood please let me know how its actually done and if you have ever used it.

cord blood? does anybody know about information on the benefits (to baby) of delaying clamping of the umbilical cord until after it has stopped pulsing. also can i ask this of the staff at hospital when i give birth or is it policy for them to clamp and cut as soon as possible. you bring up a good point steve. dna i have no idea what you are talking about. the cord reacts with the air to stop the flow on it own. i am not planning to keep the cord open forever, just delay clamping for a few minutes.

Stem cell cord blood banking companies.? It's been 5 years since I have the service with a cord blood banking company. Every year, they never sent me any invoices, I had to call them and paid over the phone by credit card before and around my son's birthday. My friend who has the same service but from a different cord blood banking company told me that she receives invoices once a year. At first I thought maybe because I called ahead (before my son's birthday) hence they hadn't sent the invoice yet. However, this year, I have forgotten about it, my son's birthday has passed for almost a month now, I still received no invoice. How do I verify if the company does not misuse the cord blood if they don't even bother to send me an invoice? Is the company trying to void the service so they can use the cord blood for their own research? Is there a government institution that controls cord blood banking companies where I could file a complaint or utter my concerns regarding the company?
Question about cord blood donation... (The actual collection process!)? We've made arrangements to have our baby's cord blood donated, and have already received the kit in the mail & everything. (I'm 35 weeks) I was wondering, when they do the collection of the cord blood, do they do it before the cord is cut, or after the cord is cut? I was hoping to let the umbilical cord stop pulsating before having it cut - Is this out the question when collecting cord blood? It's fine with me if I can't have it that way now, I already have the kit and everything, I was just wondering how it was all done!
Mismatched Umbilical Cord Blood Transfusion- how safe is it? Hi, I have been struggling to find a treatment using umbilical cord blood for thalassemia disease of my cousin who is in Kolkata, India. Finally I found and got reply from reliance bio sciences that they can provide an Umbilical Cord Blood unit for 2.5 lacs, if matched unit is available. I have been analysing the medical literature where even not-fully-matching umbilical cord blood also have been given for treatment. I would like to know about the general outcome of mismatched umbilical ord blood unit treatment and the hospitals where its done in India
C-section in the morning (7am), too late to store cord blood? i am having a csection tomorrow and me and my husband have decided we want to store the cord blood, i know there is a kit that they send you. obviously it wont get here by the surgery but will the hospital have them or something? do any companies go and do it for you?
About baby cord blood.? I know this is going to sound like I am being funny, but I am really curious. My wife is 9 months pregnant, and we keep getting these brochures and sales pitches about cord blood storage (something above out financial means and insurance doesn't cover it). My question is, if I poured cord blood on a wound, or drank it, would it heal stuff in my body? Like if the tip of my finger got cut off, could I just soak it in a bowl of cord blood and grow a new finger? I know this sounds sarcastic or humurous, but I am really not trying to be. Yes, I understand what the cord blood banks are, and why. I am just asking what would be the result if I drank the cord blood or something?
opinions on cord blood banking? i'm 21 weeks pregnant with twins. my husband and i were looking into cord blood banking and i was wondering what other's thought about it. my doctor said that if the child gets a disease that the stem cells in the cord blood would already be bad. would it make more sense to just wait and if something does happen, just get pregnant again and bank that child's cord blood? would you have it done? have you had it done? if not, why? thanks!

Cord Blood Banking? Is anyone thinking about cord blood banking? It will cost us money for them to do it but it seems every where I turn I either see advertisements for it or posters. Of course that could be cause I'm reading pregnancy magazines hahaha. I don't think we are going to do it but supposedly you can donate the cord blood for other people to use if they need it.

Cord Blood Registry....Anybody do this? My wife and I are having are first baby in about 6 weeks, were contemplating whether or not to do this "Cord Blood Registry" for $1800 bucks, then it's $120 a year where they store your baby's embilical cord, supposedly it could save your baby's life or another member of your familiy's life....anybody know anything about this?
Group Strep B Negative but showed up in cord blood? When I was tested at 36 weeks for Group Strep B, the test came back negative. My husband and I opted to save our baby's cord blood, and the cord blood bank called our pediatrician and told them they found Group Strep B in the cord blood. My son is now 10 days old and seems completely healthy to me- not showing any symptoms of being sick. My doctor says we shouldn't lose sleep over this, that she contacted Infectious Disease personnel and they think there's nothing to worry about, just to keep an eye on him and if he seems ill to call the doctor (which we would do anyway). My question is- has anyone else had this experience? Is it possible that I suddenly got Group Strep B in the last couple weeks of pregnancy after the test? Is it likely that there was contamination of our son's cord blood, either at the hospital or by the cord blood bank? Please, as much as they tell me not to worry, I am worried. This is my baby, and I would be devastated if anything happened to him.
Cord Blood Banking Question...? I am seriously considering stem cell and cord blood banking for my baby. What are your thoughts on it (pros and cons etc) and for those who have this... what company do you think is best to use?

Cord Blood Donation? Donation was not possible when my son was born because the hospital didn't offer it and am thinking about donating my daughter's cord blood. Has anyone done this? Any thoughts? Yep really am talking about donation. Banking is really expensive and there's no evidence that it can really help and no long term research as to storage degradation
cord blood banking....? What do you think about banking your babys cord blood, i know it can be very useful, should you need it, but do you think its worth the money?
Cord Blood Bank? Is anyone cosidering banking their cord blood? If you are, have you decided on a company? Heard anything about different companies or banking in general? I've seen banks with payment plans, and most cost between $1,200 and $2,100 to start, plus the $125 a year or so. But my biggest concern was what if they went out of business or something happened? That money could be put to other use. On the other hand, some things run on my maternal side (cancers and such), and I have NO idea who my father is, so who knows what history there is there? Some companies say that other close relatives (not just the baby) may be able to use the cells to treat some medical issues they have. All the annual storage fees I've seen are $100-$150, so I'm not sure where you're getting $1,000 a year for storage?
Cord blood banking? Help? we are having a baby boy in march and have the financial means to do cord blood banking. do you think that it is a good idea or another fad.. please give us your imput

Give me advise on Cord Blood Registry kit (CBR) for second child...do I need this for both children? Here is the deal. We got the first child this Cord (embellical cord) Blood Registry kit. Basically, it freezes the childs embelical cord blood with the stem cells...incase she would need some organ later in life she could have these stem cells formed into whatever. So...my wife wants this for the second child as well...They told her it is DNA related and that needs to match...however, a sibling could also use the others stem cells with a less successful rate. I just can't buy that info...it just sounds to me like they're trying to sell us some more stem cells... Here is my question (s): Aren't stem cells interchangeble...regaurless of who they came from? Does the DNA really affect the success rate of stem cells? My theroy behind these observations are simple. The debate to stem cell research was spond from scientist wanting to farm embreos...so that tells me that DNA has little or nothing to do with stem cell success...RIGHT? Sorry for the long explanation... However, I need proof / facts or scientific evidance in order to make this argument to my wife...links are welcome. I just feel like it's a line of BS that we need to do this because of the DNA match. to the first answer: There are litterally millions of stem cells in this blood...I mean to be exact we got 183 million from the first childs cord blood...so I heard that one stem cell can be formed to create whatever is needed...

Cord blood banking? I heard once that you could donate you cord blood to a public bank . Has anyone actually done this and if so how do you get that process started? To be more specific I was actually wondering about donating it to a public bank, not the private banks. With the public banks you can donate for free and it goes to anyone in need not just you or your family.
