Should in vitro stem cell research completely replace live animal testing? We all know that live animal testing is responsible for killing millions of animals every year. Is there really a point? What are some reasons that stem cells should or should not be used? It is important to know that stem cells can be harvested from a few different places; adults, embryos, and umbilical cords or placentas, and from animals. It is true that embryos will die if used for stem cells, however, the embryos that would be used are those that are not going to be implanted anyway. So what is more ethical, killing an embryo because you don't want it, or killing an embryo to help millions of people that need it? Stem cell research is beneficial and is also more effective. Stem cells are mor efficient in testing and instead of using hundreds of animals to test one thing, a few stem cells could be used instead. What do you guys think?

Another question.? I'm thinking about banking my baby's umbilical cord blood stem cells. I've read where using them can cure osteoporosis. I don't know. I signed up at baby zone after I was pregnant and the sent me E-mails on it. Has anyone else done this? My husband's sister had Hurler's, we both have diabetic's in our family. Does anyone else find the process of stem cell research to be a little shady? I will admit to being ignorant of the in and outs of this research. First, aren't stem cells present in the umbilical cord? When I was pregnant, all sorts of info about banking the babies cord blood, due to the versatility of stem cells, seemed to say that they were. So, if these wonderful cells are present in umbilical cords, that we routinely throw away, why do we need recently fertilized eggs? Second, what could the possible benefit of having .1% of the dna in that egg be animal? (They are passing laws about this in Britian right now). I need to support these two arguments regarding Stem Cell Research? I need to support the argument that Stem cell research is moral and: 1. They should be acquired, because embryos are being discarded that are stored in clinics since they can be used to cure diseases and are discarded anyway. 2. I'm disabled, dying of terminal emphysema and recently learned a biotech company in CA has a cure using stem cells derived from umbilical cord blood. They also have stem cell treatment for diabetes (which I also have), Alzheimer's, ALS, spinal cord injuries, MS, and several other debilitating conditions. Thanks to our glorious President's short sighted views, treatment in not available in the U.S. but is in Mexico. The company gets umbilical cords, which you all know are destroyed after birth, from Canada, extracts the stem cells, then sends them to a hospital in Mexico for a one day IV treatment. I have 3 email friends who've already had the treatment and are showing remarkable improvement. The cost is prohibitive to me at $16,000 plus air fare to CA. If I had the treatment, I could then go back to work. All who know me will tell you I am a very responsible and proud man and would pay every one back over time. IF Only -- were that only the case. You need to know what emphysema is. It's not like asthma which is an inflamation. Emphysema is the distruction of the alveoli, which don't grow back. The prognosis for some one at my stage is 4 years, and I'm long past that now.
