umbilical cord cutting? i understand the process of cutting an umbilical cord and the controversies regarding when and if to cut it immediately after birth... however, i keep reading different opinions as to how close the actual cutting should be to the babies belly along the umbilical cord... one opinion recommended 5 inches away from the baby and another advised one inch... any medics out there want to comment?

Why do we need to remove our umbilical cord? When we are just born into this world, the doctors will cut off our umbilical cords. Why is it animals do not need to have their umbilical cords removed? What cause their umbilical cords to fall off by themselves? If the umbilical cords of animals can fall off themselves, why do doctors bother to cut off ours? Wouldn't ours also fall off themselves?
Questions about umbilical cord at delivery? 1. When the baby is delivered, the umbilical cord is cut, but why does the cord stay on the baby until it falls off? 2. When the cord is cut and clipped, does unclipping it cause bleeding? 3. Why does the baby no longer need the maternal blood supply ex-utero?
What to do with umbilical cord? As soon as when the baby comes out of you, they cut the umbilical cord from the baby's belly. But what happens to the other end of the umbilical cord? Would it be still be inside the mom? Do they pull the other end out of her or do they cut it real close so the rest will stay in her?
First child births ever..how did they know to cut the umbilical cord?? Ok so mainly- my Q is - way way way back when mothers were FIRST giving birth to their children, how did they know to cut the umbilical cords? I mean I don't know about you, but if I was giving birth to this little tiny lifeform, and I see this cord connecting it to me, obviously it's sustaing life from it, I wouldn't want to cut it. So how did this practice develop, of cutting the cords WAY way back?? Thanks.
Did your husband/boyfriend cut the umbilical cord? My bf doesn't want to because he gets queasy very easy and I just plain think its gross. Due June 29th, I don't think that is ok for a 5 year old, but everyone is different. Just the thought of cutting flesh makes me cringe.
What happens to the part of the umbilical cord that is attached to the Mother? I know that the umbilical cord is tied off and cut, seperating the Mother and Child. What happens to the part that is attached to the Mother? Does it fall off, is it cut off or is it placed back inside the Mother. How long is it and what is it attached to? I know this is a weird question coming from a guy but I really don't know. I asked my girlfriend who has 2 kids and she didn't even know. She slept through it. I'd really like to know and after the smart a** answers (which are pretty funny sometimes), I can find out the truth. Thanks in advance for you answer to this. Mike h.

Immediate Cord cutting, is this true, advise from moms please? Common hospital protocol dictates that the umbilical cord must be cut immediately after a baby is born. But current research brings into question the safety of this practice, as it has been found that there are numerous risks to immediate cord clamping. Here are some: 1. Early clamping (within 30 seconds of birth) can deprive the baby of much oxygen-rich blood and may hinder the optimal functioning of the baby’s organs and brain. 2. This blood is called placental transfusion. As the uterus continues to contract during the third stage of labor, the placental transfusion is passed through the cord to the baby. 3. The placental transfusion is also rich in iron. Babies who experienced early cord-clamping are more likely to be anemic at 3 months. 4. If this blood remains in the placenta, it is bulkier and more difficult to deliver. These risks virtually disappear if the cord cutting takes place after the umbilical cord stops pulsing, which occurs a few minutes after birth.
Why isn’t it legal for parents to kill their newborn baby before the umbilical cord is cut? - When a woman is pregnant and full-term (40 weeks or ~9 months), it is OK and legal to: 1) Administer a lethal injection to the baby while still in the womb, killing the baby, and then delivering the baby’s dead body. 2) While in the womb, gradually dismember the baby, taking off and out the arms and legs, head, and body…in pieces. 3) Deliver the baby breech (feet first) to the point in which the legs are dangling out of the vagina with the baby’s toes wiggling…and then inserting a powerful metal vacuum suction device up and through the baby’s body and into the baby’s skull and sucking out the baby’s brains. - Commonly in obstetrics (especially in multiparous patients), there is what is known as a “precipitous” delivery, in which a baby delivers extremely fast and before expected. As a physician I have delivered many babies of moms who barely make it to the hospital…delivering their baby in seconds…even without gloves, at times! Sometimes during an abortion, the live, healthy baby “precipitously” delivers before the abortion doctor can kill the baby. It use to be that the abortion doctor could then smother the baby and kill it before cutting the umbilical cord. But for some reason, the Partial Birth Abortion law, passed in 2003, finally making this illegal…though it still happens “behind closed doors” in abortion clinics. Of course, I have never participated in an abortion. Thankfully, in medical training, I had the option of foregoing such “education”. But on to my question… So…if numbers 1, 2, and 3 above are considered OK and legal, then why wouldn’t it be OK and legal for parents (or the doctor) to simply kill the newborn child…before the umbilical cord is cut? In the womb…and it is OK to kill the baby… But 5 seconds later and out of the womb, it is not OK to kill the baby? In the womb, and parents have the “choice” to kill their baby… But 5 seconds later, they no longer have that choice? Is their “freedom of choice” taken away from them…in a matter of seconds, based on the exact “location” of their baby? - Third Trimester abortions are LEGAL in the U.S. They do them all the time at places such as this: http://www.drtiller.com/

Lotus birth, or leaving the cord attached instead of cutting it? Has anyone out there done this? What do you think of it? Instead of clamping and cutting the umbilical cord immediately or shortly after baby's birth, leaving it attached (with the placenta) until it falls off on its own (within a week or two)? I am planning on doing this when my baby is born. Wanted to hear from others on this, see what the "knee jerk reaction" is, see how it went for others. And so forth. Also anyone who knows of complications that could arise by this method, please provide me with references and sources. Thanks so much for your time. I heard of this through different natural birthing sites, as well as references in some books I've read about pregnancy and birth. The reason I am interested in this, is because of the quick recovery time (cord and placenta are said to fall away within 3-7 days, as opposed to the 10-30 for a cord stump) Also there is concern to how "important" the placenta is to baby. Recent years docs have been clamping and severing cords at record speeds (usually within seconds of birth). medical evidence suggests this to be dangerous to the baby, as up to half his/her blood volume is retained in the placenta, instead of following natural order and flowing slowly into baby. Damages done could be low apgar scores, bluish tinge, unresponsiveness, and respiratory distress. (This is from cutting the cord Way too early, so I figured, why not just leave it alone?) I haven't found any thing to suggest a danger for leaving the cord and placenta attached, besides the "gross out factor". As for what to do with it, I would probably rinse it after birth, place it in a cloth nappie or specially made bag, and simply carry it around with the baby (on his/her tummy). Since it will only be on there a week, and I don't feel up to going out and doing anything anyways, I don't see how it could be too inconvenient. Also anecdotal evidence suggests babies are comforted by this, and lie playing with the cord with their feet or holding it in their hands admiring it. Since they have been familiar with this for 9 months, I figure why not make that transition to the "outside" a little easier with this built-in "security blanket". And of course it Will fall off naturally... so no worries, he won't have it forever! :) I guess it would be for warm fuzzie reasons, as well as we don't fully know what the placenta is capable of doing since our culture is used to snapping it off so soon. Wow, alot of hostility. I am not trying to get people riled up by any means, and I did ask for opinions / gut reaction. This is kind of suprising to me, though, how many are afraid of this (ie suggesting someone call CPS??). I am still searching for reasons this could be dangerous (ie rotting or infection). Nothing yet... I'll certainly inform you if I find it! an alternate idea was indeed to consume at least some part of the placenta for the Vitamin K (I will be breastfeeding, and this extra vitamin K from the placenta will eliminate the need for Vitamin K injections) as well as the extra nutrients and burst of energy. Oh and there are animals that practice this, some species of monkey. Other animials do consume it, probably because of the risk of predators finding their babies by the blood, and because of the nutrients it contains.
Cut the umbilical cord already!!? My fiance's mother is way beyond controlling. Happily for me however over the past few years my boyfriend has tried to cut the umbillical cord as much as possible. He is 35 yrs old so it can really be ANNOYING!! She visits him at work just to give him guilt trips about how unsatisfied she is with his choice of wife, how we are raising our three children, how our finances are not good enough, how she is dissapointed that I am pregnant again ( we are happy) and this and that. However when she talks to me she is as sweet as pie (fake) - She complanes and nags as much as she breaths and I know it is very emmotionally and physically draining on him. He calls me at least once a day and says..."mom stopped by today" he sounds so tired. I really just want to call her up and tell her that if she doesn't have anything positive to add to their conversations then maybe they shouldn't talk as much because its very hard on him. We would like to raise our own family now any suggestions?
Is there any side effects if the umbilical cord of the newborn baby is not entirely cut? There is a friend to a friend of mine. When he was borned, there was some kind of difficulties or something ( i'm not sure) that made the doctors to leave some part of the baby's umbilical cord. Now he is 12 years old and having a normal life as other normal kids. The umbilical cord can be felt at the navel and it looks like a red-jelly-like ( fortunately it is not getting bigger or worse). After i found out about this, i was wondering maybe now he lives a normal life but what about in the future? The 'red' i meant is blood. The left umbilical cord now contains of blood.
Can Indian Muslims sing "Vande Mataram" as an opportunity to cut their umbilical cord with the Islamists? The root cause of all the evils is the pseudo secular democracy designed and implanted by Nehru which was further carefully nurtured and groomed by his dynasty. The Muslim cronies handpicked and deployed as Muslim leaders had the secret pact with this dynasty in return for a major share in waqf properties and Muslim endowments. These are the guys who introduced alien concepts like Shariah,Talaq,Polygamy,Jihad,Kafir,Fatwa, Tableeque Jamat and Madrassa education to alienate the Indian Muslims from their Hindu brothers and laid the foundation for vote bank and Muslim appeasement politics of the dynasty. Indian Muslims should capture "Vande Mataram" as a golden opprtunity and in fact they can celebrate this singing ceremony for one year as a powerful launching pad for Indian Muslim nationalism. This way they can cut their umbilical cord with the Islamists and can win the heart and minds of their 900 million Hindu brothers also. VANDE MATARAM. By an Indian Muslim.
Is it time to cut the umbilical cord???? For hundreds of years people have edured natural disasters. After Katrina, more aid and assistance was handed our and MORE QUICKLY than any other in history.
