Cancer STEM cells true cause of cancer and researchers missing the ball? What do you think? 1994 Researchers discovered the cancer stem cell in AML (leukemia). Other researchers did not believe it. Since then, about 15 cancers have been found to have cancer stem cells. Now the cancer stem cell is the cell that produces the cancer cell. Treatments for the last 30-40 years target only the cancer cells, missing the stem cell altogether. This may be why you get complete remissions in cancer (no cancer cells), but then the cancer returns because the cancer stem cell remains to regrow the cancer cells. Research is proving this out at Stanford, U Toronto, U Mich. and Hopkins. Yet other research centers and doctors have not picked up on this idea. This is akin to malpractice perhaps. Clinical trials will be coming out to target the cancer stem cells, and if you get some cures, then there will be a complete shift in thinking. Too bad it has taken 40 years.
Where would these cancer cells stem from? My sister has had a partial hysterectomy where her ovaries were left. She has had one ovary taken since and her pap smear came back abnormal where pre-cancerous cells were found. Without her cervix and uterus, where would these cells be coming from?
Cancer stem cells are the true cause of cancer? Cancer stem cells were first postulated over 100 years ago. Biologist named Beard called then germ cells that produce cancer cells in 1902-1906 Then in 1994-97 researchers finally did isolate the first cancer stem cell, in leukemia. Since then cancer stem cells have been found in multiple cancers like breast, colon, pancreas, myeloma, and brain. Leading research centers for cancer stem cell work are Johns Hopkins, Stanford, and U Michigan. There are some clinical trials soon to start to target cancer stem cells. So, what is a cancer stem cell? it is the cell that produces the actually cancer cell. Stem cells divide into more stem cells and progenitor cells that go on to be mature cells. So the cancer stem cell will reproduce itself and more cancer cells. Current therapies do not kill the cancer stem cells, so they then can then produce more cancer cells. If you can kills of all cancer stem cells, then the cancer may be cured. T
Why has bush cut research funds for cancer and hindered embryonic stem cells research? Is he a monster? 1500 dying of cancer daily, yer Bush has cut research funds for 7 years! Researchers are hurting for funds. Dr Cui at Wake Forest has a possible cure for cancer, yet his funds are cut. Embryonic stem cell research is cut by religious fanatics that knoe nothing of science!
A question about stem-cells and cancer? I recently read an article about stem-cells proliferating cancer. How much evidence is there to support this argument? Is there any evidence against it? And if its true, what can be done to solve the problem?

Why are stem cells able to treat cancer? How is the cell cycle affected by stem cell treatment?
Cancer ans Stem Cells? Can i have a website that explains the potential benefit to stem cell use for disease like cancers??
New evidence for cancer cure is kill the cancer stem cell? Evidence keeps growing that to cure cancer, you must kill off the cancer stem cell. For the last 30-40 years, cancer treatment has focused on just the cancer cell, and not the cancer stem cell. This is like killing the weed plant you see above ground and leaving the root behind. The root will regrow the weed, just like the cancer stem cell will regrow the cancer cells. Now, Tykerb has been shown to kill off breast cancer stem cells in some types of breast cancer, Parthenolide/DMAPT kills AML (leukemia) stem cells and other cancer stem cells, GRN163L kills myeloma stem cells. Cyclopamine and the new water soluble version kill prostate cancer stem cells and myeloma stem cells. Clinical trials to start soon. So, will this finally lead to some cancer cures? I await the evidence.
does anyone of u believe that stem cells are responsible for cancer formation? a very serious question to doctors, biologists, health care professionals or to those who have knowledge regarding stem cells and their distinct property..does anyone believe that stem cells are involved in formation of cancer and can be use for cancer therapy..its a controversial question but this question can well solve one of the mysteries of modern medicine...as some scientists speculate that stem cells are resp for cancer formation and its unique nature as a self spreading, forever proliferation disease...
Do you think the cancer problem with the new skin-derived stem cells bring back the invitro issue? http://blog.wired.com/wiredscience/2007/11/skin-cells-to-s.html This technique could not be used before because it activates a known cancer gene and gave the recipient mice cancer. This time, they left that gene inactive, but only followed them for 100 days. The researcher says the other genes may activate that gene later and a long term followup will be needed.
Stem Cell Treatment for Cancer - How is it done? My friends mum has mouth cancer and now has 2 months of stem cell treatment. Does anyone know how this is done? Is immunotherapy the key to cancer cure? Cancer research is now starting to focus on cancer stem cells and immunotherapy to eradicate cancer. Cancer stem cells may be the root cause of cancer, but there is evidence that immunotherapy may be able to eradicate cancers completely. There appears to be cancer immune people who can live to be 100 and never get cancer, even if they smoke. They may have a natural immunity to cancer. Wake Forest researchers have recently found cancer immune humans and are proposing a trial to transfer the white blood cells of these humans into cancer patients to see if their cancers will disappear. They already have done this in mice with complete success (SR/CR mice cancer immunity). There are also IDO and SOX2 immunity studies being researched. Wake Forest discovered mice that are resistant to cancer completely. They then transferred the white blood cells of these mice to other mice with cancer. The cancers were completely eradicated and they mice lived normal lives. This is innate immunity and this is the first time this has been shown. Researchers are trying to find the genetic cause of this to see if they can activate the same gene in humans. They also have identified cancer immune people and want to to transfer these people's white blood cells to humans in trials this fall. \Would be incredible if this worked. NP
What research has been conducted in the field of stem cells and what are the summarised results? I want to know more about this field but need a basic knowledge. I also want to know about HOW these results were achieved. Has there been any revolutionary scientific breakthroughs either in stem cell research. And could anyone please inform me about how far we off maybe curing cancer or regrowing USABLE nerve cells and any key info on either of these subjects. Thanks.
Do stem cells cure breast cancer? Here is an article that says so. http://www.medsocial.com/blog.aspx?blogaction=viewblog&show=280
Are you for or against stem cell research for a cure for cancer and why? The reason I am asking this is because I am writing a research paper for college on the topic. I am a Catholic and also conservative (normally against stem cell research) but my mother had cancer when I was younger so of course if she didn't have to go through what she did I should love the idea. I was just wondering other people's opinions as a sort of "poll" type-source, unscholarly of course.
Has anyone had a successful stem cell transplant for reason of cancer? This is the next radical step for my husband as the cancer seems stubborn. He's getting infections though that are slowing the process down.
Do you believe stem cells cures central nervous cancer? Here is an article that says so. http://www.medsocial.com/blog.aspx?blogaction=viewblog&show=280
Is immunotherapy the cure for cancer? There are two big research studies that may indicate that cancer can be cured via immunotherapy. First is the mice cancer SR/CR immunity research at Wake Forest. They have bred mice that are resistant to all cancers, and they transfer their immunity to mice with cancer, by tranferring their white blood cells. The mice were cured completely and lived normal lives. The second study just came out in JEM, March 26, showing that their is an immune response in MGUS, a precancerous condition. They found that immunity to SOX6 prevents the cancer at the cancer stem cell level.. Lack of immunity meant the cancer occurred. Now Wake Forest researchers are trying to duplicate their mice immunity study by opening a trial in humans. The researchers want to take wbc's from humans with high levels of cancer immunity and tranfer the wbc's to cancer patients to see if the wbc's will kill the cancer.

Stem cell and cancer info needed!!!? Hi Guys, I work with someone who is claiming their relative was diagnosed with breast cancer 12 months ago and was receiving treatment for it. (not sure what though) she then 6 months later claimed her friends cancer had spread to her lungs and the cancer in now terminal. However, she is saying that she has never even been offered to have her breasts removed and is now receiving stem cell therapy. This is definatly not lukemia as I am aware it has been researched that stem cell therapy can help. Basically! And I been spun a story and feeling sorry for someone who is just telling lies!? Why does the media give such low press tothe success of non-embrionic stem cell research? no one is opposed to non-embrionic stem cell research and many argue to think more mature stem cells are less likley to morph into cancer cells than embryonic stem cells. But it seems in the media when the mean embryonic stem cel research why is it they just say "stem cell" research and harly report non embryonic stem cell research

Pro choice people: If ONE child in all the aborted babies or embryonic stem cells were to become a doctor that would cure all forms of cancer, but you don't know which one, would you stop abortion/stem cell research? ***Lets see how fast MY question gets deleted because I favor pro-life. Twat?- Wow you just didn't answer my qustion. I didn't expect that! <=Sarcasm It must be great to answer a question with a question while never addressing my question! Impact of stem cells and timeframe? Reading the following paragraph I truly appreciate the research and development of stem cells. But how long do you think it will be before some of the things mentioned are realized and made available to the masses? 5... 10-20 or 40 years off? To appreciate the potential importance of stem cell therapy, consider the following applications in the treatment of human disease: the use of stem cell therapy to repair damaged spinal cords; cure Crohn's disease, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's; re-grow arteries around a blockage; re-grow limbs; replace failed kidneys and hearts; cure diabetes by replacing non-functional cells in the pancreas; restore vision and hearing; treat leukemia and lymphoma that are non-responsive to normal therapy; and treat brain cancer. These are merely a few of the potential applications of this phenomenal science. In fact most of the treatments listed above have already been studied, and with promising results. Maybe the way I asked the question sounded crazy... I thought people would be a little more excited about the subject, lol~
Why are we not supporting Adult Stem Cells? Using human embryos is crazy. Embryonic stem cells have never cured ANYTHING. It is still a THEORY. NO ONE has PROVEN it Works. ADULT STEM CELL RESEARCH has proven it is a miracle worker for people with Diabetes, paralysis, blindness, cancer and up to 40 illness and disability that there was no known cure for!!! The number of illness and disabilities are still being discovered!!! /www.viacord.com/ If people were more current with the news they would know that Bush has put close to 78 million dollars into a cord bank system donated from placentas that they will be compatible with above 90% of the American population. http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/061108/law081.html?.v=101 NOTE: Stem Cell from the placentas from babies already born.
Can anyone object to the new method for creating Stem Cells? http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071120/ap_on_sc/stem_cells I will say I have to thank to groups who opposed stem cell research because if they can solve the flaws in this method then it will be vastly superior, cheaper, easier and be able to produce greater quantities. Now I now this is still new and has side effects like cancer that they are working on so it is not ready to go yet.......but does anyone see where this could be objectionable or a reason we should prevent it once they get the process nice+safe? Fireball226> What do you find wrong here? They are not taking any cell that could in any way become a life or person....what is the problem?
