Cord Blood Stem Cells Information

Did you opt for cord blood banking? How much did it cost and which company did you use?

My doctor said we need to decide whether we want to save our baby's cord blood when it is born. Did you opt to do this, and how much did it cost? There are about 9 companies to choose from, how did you choose? Why did you decide to do it?? (Looking for people with personal experience on this one. Thank you!!)

  1. I opted to not save my cord blood. Unless you have a family history of specific disorders it will probably just be a waste of money.
  2. I looked into it and it's really too expensive, even considering the possible benefits. My mother is currently going through something where she will eventually need a bone marrow transplant. She had her own bone marrow frozen about 11 years ago, and the doctors told her that the stem cells are too old to be used now. So, given that doctors seem reluctant to use stem cells after a certain point, I really don't think that my child is going to need them within the next 10-15 years (knock on wood). That's how I reached my decision, anyway.
  3. I think that it's a great thing to do but it is really expensive, I know my doctor told me it's about 1200 dollars to "harvest" it and I think he said 100 dollars a month to store it after that. I know I can't afford that right now.
  4. I looked into Via cord, but it cost too much, you can go to their website and find out anything you need to know. The cost of ViaCord's processing service $2,050 plus $125 for annual storage, for a total of $2,175 payable over 12-months. This includes: collection kit training materials for your labor-and-delivery team 24-hour on-call service private courier service to transport the collected cord blood from your bedside to ViaCord's Processing Lab tests and documented results sent directly to you processing, cryopreservation and storage for the first year The on-going annual storage fee is $125 per year. good luck in your decision,if you can afford it go for it.It can not only save your babies life it can also save anyother children you have, you and babies father. We just don't have that kind of money so we've dicided to donate ours,at least it will help somebody out.
