What happens to the umbilical cord after the baby is born and it is cut?
I was wondering what happens to the umbilical cord after it's cut from the baby??? I mean what happens to the rest of the umbilical cord that is still in your uterus

- Well they dont keep it. And they will put this thing on it because some of the cord will still be attached and when it falls off it falls off.
- They usually wait for it to die and fall off. Then you can either toss it, keep it (ew), or if you don't let it die it can be frozen for stem cell research.
- part of it is attached to the placenta & if you dont have cordblood registry or anything like that it is discarded. The part left on the baby is clapped off, eventually dries up & falls of- leaves a little mucussy part that will dry up too and heal, then it'll look like a normal belly button. I would look into core blood registry. it saves blood cells from the umbilical cord that can be used later if god forbid you child needs a tranfusion or has cancer- it can be life saving. It's expensive though... usally like $3000 to register & store for years. You can also donote it for stem cell research... or like a organ donor it may be used if it matches someone else. it all depends on your city. Mine did not have any was top donate & I couldn't afford the cord blood banking.
- The umbilical cord is not "still in your uterus". It comes out with the baby, attached to the placenta.
- The umbilical cord is attatched to the placenta which comes out right after the baby does,so there is nothing left in your uterus.
- The other end of the umbilical cord is attached to the placenta. It is expelled after the baby is born.
- The part that is still in your uterus is attached to the placenta and the placenta is delivered after the baby is born.
- usually what comes out they cut and when the baby is coming out it pulls the bag, or however you want to call it. the baby brings out all of this with him. some of the cord is still left on the baby. then in time falls off. and that will be the belly button...
- The placenta is delivered after the baby comes out.
- The umbilical cord is connected to the placenta. After you deliver the baby, within 5 minutes later you deliver the placenta (which is about half the size of the baby). The hospital takes care of the placenta (throwing it away or burning it or whatever it is they do). If you have a c-section, they take it out right after they take the baby out.
- Thank you for asking this question. I was wondering the same thing
- After it is delivered, part or all of it is checked by a pathologist. Then it is tossed into hospital waste bin to be cremated. If you want to keep the cord and/or placenta, just ask. They will bag it up for you. Some people plant it under a tree. I would just want to see the thing that kept baby alive for all those many months and look at it carefully (photo op) and then have them discard it. I wasn't given that opportunity the first time.
- It is attached to the placenta and usually gets shipped of to some lab for testing for genetic diseases or discarded.
- Its gets thrown away
