What should a newborns belly buttom look like after the umbilical cord falls off?
My sons umbilical cord fell off at 14 days old. There was blood on his onsie when we woke that morning and found out it had fall off. His belly button has brown crusty's/scab like stuff in it. Is this normal?

- yea it will be crusty and brown
- Yes. My daughter had that too. I called her doctor and he said to continue to use rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball and no baths. Also hers was a little red.
- Yes, it is normal. To get it to heal use rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab and swab the area. It helps dry it up. It is just a scab and has to heal. Also you can fold the diaper down so the belly button is exposed to the air.
- keep it cleaned with alcohol
- My sons did as well, i think his was like that for a week or so after it had fallen off. Rubbing alcohol helps to keep it clean, and dries it out. My visiting nurse told me to do it with my son.
- totally normal and just clean it once a day with an alcohol swab.
- Both of my sons' umbilical cords fell of at 14 days too and looked exactly like you described. However, my midwives and the boys' pediatrician told me to just leave it alone from day 1. Fold the diaper down and that is it (unless it starts oozing yellow puss or something). Now you can give him a real bath and can stop doing the sponge baths! That will be fun! Enjoy your baby! They grow so fast!
- It's normal, just keep putting alcohol on it until it looks like a normal belly button-no scabs or gunk.
