What happens to the part of the umbilical cord that is attached to the Mother?
I know that the umbilical cord is tied off and cut, seperating the Mother and Child. What happens to the part that is attached to the Mother? Does it fall off, is it cut off or is it placed back inside the Mother. How long is it and what is it attached to? I know this is a weird question coming from a guy but I really don't know. I asked my girlfriend who has 2 kids and she didn't even know. She slept through it. I'd really like to know and after the smart a** answers (which are pretty funny sometimes), I can find out the truth. Thanks in advance for you answer to this. Mike h.

- The umbilical cord is attached to the placenta which is expelled after the baby is born.
- The other end is attached to the placenta which is expelled after the baby is born. It is part of what is called the "after-birth".
- it comes out with the placenta when the placenta is dispelled from the mothers' body.
- the umbilical cord is not attached to the mother.....it is attached to the placenta....after the mother deliver the placenta ......she also delivered the umbilical cord that was attached to the baby.....
- Interesting question....my guess they tie it just like they do for the baby....oh that's right, it's attached to the placenta...that little purple pocket book that comes out after the baby.
- the umbilical cord come out with the placenta.
- It comes out with the placenta. The whole thing is called the "afterbirth". It is vital for all of it to come out or infection would occur.
- lol @ is it placed back inside the mother well according to some of the post that I have read on here some people store the umbilical cord at home in their freezer, than reinsert them back for later pregnancies. YUCK but the real answer is the umbilical cord comes out with the placenta. nothing is placed back inside of the mother.
- it is expelled with the after birth.
- Hi Mike. It is true. The umbilical cord is attached to the placenta or after birth. This is how babies get their food, oxygen and for waste elimination. This pocket of nourishment is expelled after the baby is born. There are no nerve endings in this and baby feels nothing when it is cut. Hope that helps.
- the umbilical cord is attached to the baby via the bell button and to the placenta inside the womb it acts like a hose to feed baby whatever mum eats and supply blood after the baby is born(natural) the mother then has to deliver the remainder Is the contents is no longer needed inside the body this is called the after birth and the pull it by the remainder of cord and you have to push this is not a stupid question because no one ever tell you about this and how many times have you seen an afterbirth delivered in a movie?? hope this helps your question it is good to see men getting involved and thinking about what us women have to go through lol
- As everyone is saying, it is attached to the placenta and comes out when the placenta is pushed out. It is about 20 inches long or so, but like everything in pregnancy, that can vary.
- The part that is attached to the mother is actually attached to the placenta. The placenta comes out after birth. The other part of the cord is actually quite long- up to a few feet. I don't know what they did with mine, but I bet they probably threw it out. Some people plant their placenta in the ground under a tree or keep them or something.
- It is attached to the placenta (or sac) and after the baby is born, the placenta is delivered as well. The placenta is then checked for tears to make sure it all came out, because pieces of that left behind can cause problems for the mom. BTW-the placenta is not a part of mom's body, it is a sac that forms around the baby.
- Hi Mike - From reading all of the answers you got thus far, I can see you have already gotten the facts. However, I would just like to add one of those smart @$$ comments... It all depends on how old the child is before the umbillical gets cut. Many times they have to wait until they get married before their wife forces it to be cut. My ex-husband is 32 and is still attached to his Mommy, even with his 3rd wife.
