What do/did you do with the babies umbilical cord after it has fallen off?

Hi there, I am currently 37 weeks preganant and i was wondering what should be done with the babies umbilical cord after it has fallen away from the babies stomach? What did other mothers do? Did you bury it, keep it, throw it away, have it incenerated or are you expected to give it to your doctor for some reason? I am just curious because i have no idea what to do with the umbilical cord (not the after birth, the bit that stays attached to the baby until it dries up and falls off) after it has fallen off.

  1. i fried mine daughter's with some eggs and bacon... it's high in protein.
  2. well my sciene teacher kept it in a big jar with vinegar i think. or some sort of liquid so it doesnt turn bad. im not sure about the cord but some people eat the placenta.
  3. Keep it and put in in his/her baby book.
  4. kept it for my baby when older.
  5. Just chuck it.
  6. Throw it away.
  7. The little bit that they secure with a peg? When it dries up and falls off you put it in the bin!!
  8. threw it away but kept the peg that they put on it
  9. i dont think people keep it, i think doctors throw them away but i geuss you could ask the doctor for it specially and frame it or something..
  10. I actually threw it away but i kept the little clip that was on the unbilical cord.
  11. I had my daughters cord bronzed, and is on the fireplace. We get hours of enjoyment looking at it and talking about it.
  12. Just throw it away. It's a bit gross. ;)
  13. After my babies umbilical cord came off, i put talc powder on it to dry it totally and have kept it in his memory box. I save all sorts of things for him to look at when he is older. My mum did the same for me :0)
  14. I kept both of my babies umbilical cords & but them in there baby box
  15. come on lol you have got to be kidding. what do you think you do with it throw it away along with the diaper lol oh my god what is this world producing
  16. You can keep it in a baby book for memories to tell your child when he or she gets older or you can just throw it away like my mom just did for my baby sister. She just recently had a baby.
  17. Kept mine in a sealed bag and put it in his baby book. IF it grosses you out you can throw it away but to me its what kept us so close!
  18. Eww. I tossed them. That's just too gross for me to think of as a sentimental reminder. ( I also think that it's disgusting when people keep their pregnancy tests too. NASTY-you peed on it!) Edit* I can't believe how many nasty dried up bits of umbilical cord are lying about peoples homes! (and in the curio-that's where my china goes!) Sorry, that's soooo not for me. What do you do with it when you move? I would hate to explain that to my movers! I'm just in awe.
  19. I threw it in the dirty diaper and put it in the trash...
  20. Mine was kept! It was actually quite funny when my mom showed me it, it doesn't give you hours of fun but it's interesting to look at.
  21. Oh yuk - some of these suggestions! Just bin it!
  22. I put both my children's umbilical cord in their First Baby's Album which records their height, weight, first tooth, first walk etc.
  23. I kept it in a special memory box with all the cards that I'd got with gifts. Along with the litle hospital bands. Its not actually disgusting.. just a little piece of rawhide with the peg attached...and it dries very quickly. Its no use to the doctors usually. And good on you for asking. I didn't know very much before my first was born and was too scared to ask...as a result I bumbled my way through alot and made heaps and heaps of little mistakes. btw Congratulations. ;)
  24. Are you sure you haven't given birth yet?? cause your baby is already post term, by the way here's the answer to your question. It defends on what culture do you believe in, some people keeps it some throws it away. the only one who can decide on what to do with it is you and your husband.
  25. I keep it in a plastic bag with the measuring tape, the eye cream and his hat from the day he was born. My son's fell off in two parts, so I have 2 pieces in there. =)
  26. Dang..why so many thumbs down for the mothers who are sentimental? Geez. Anyway, I kept my daughter's in her baby book. My mother kept mine's and I thought that it was a special thing to do for my baby. :)
  27. I let my mother kept it for me. In our culture, we kept it. Old people would say that keeping it safely will entail good health and driving sickness away from your baby. I don't know if what they say is true. But nothing will be lost if I keep it intact for my baby to have and see when she is old enough to appreciate her early days in this world.
  28. I kept both my babys cord when it fell off there in zip lock bags in my curio cabinet. good Luck with the baby and what ever you decide to do with the cord when it falls off....
  29. My first daughters father has her's at his house . It's in a plastic baggie in her baby book. My husband and I have our second daughters in a plastic baggie safety pinned to her her baby cap that she wore home from the birthing center . I know one day I'll probably throw it out but even tho she's almost 2 yrs old I still can't part with it yet
  30. I tossed them. why would you want to save something so disgusting and honestly something no one is really going to care about?
  31. Would you keep a scab? Do you keep your toe-nails after you have cut them? Have you a collection of belly-button fluff? The bit of cord gets chucked with the nappy!
  32. well i was supposed to put it in the box of special things i have for her but my partner chucked it in the bin
  33. I certainly wasn't about to keep my sons lol, his turned bad and smelt disgusting! The midwives describe it as rotting flesh, who in their right mind would want to keep rotting flesh lol, my advice is, if your some kind of sentimental fool to take it off from the clip and just keep the plastic clip, there are going to be plenty of other things you can keep, such as baby id tags, photo's, soft toys, rattles, clothes, first hair cut, etc xxx
  34. i put it in a ziplock and put it in his scrapbook.
  35. i kept my sons in in a little box and i keep it in this memory cylinder , i wanna show him wen he is older
  36. keep it for a while then through it away
  37. I put it in the bin as it is like a dried up scab! The sentimental bit is the clip that is put on it, that can be sterilised and kept as a keepsake.
  38. I threw them away. That's honestly kind of gross to keep them. What for? You remember what they look like. EEwww.
  39. I have kept it and put it in with all the other stuff (hospital bracelet things, cards from people when he was born etc) to make a memory box for him. I have also got the first plaster he had after his heelprick lol i am so sad!
  40. I threw it in the garbage
  41. it came off with my daughters nappy, needless to say we chucked it lol. i would have done anyway, i dont see what keeping a dead bit of skin does
  42. I kept my sons umbilical cord. I put in a clear plastic bag.
  43. I threw the cord away but kept the plastic fastener and put it in the baby book.
  44. put it in the bin
  45. I've kept mine..it fell off within 3-4 days and I've kept it....my auntie has one of her childrens attached to her keys lol
