What does a perfect knot in the umbilical cord mean?

When my son was born a few weeks ago I heard the nurses tell the doctor that the umbilical cord had a perfect knot in it. I asked the nurses what it meant and they just said that it had a knot in it. I was wondering if this effected the baby in anyway. He was born early and was smaller than my girls. He is fine, but I'm just wondering if anybody knew.

  1. The nurse told you what it meant. If you want more of an explanation ask the doctor.
  2. Nope, had there been a problem you would know! "What are umbilical cord knots? About 1 percent of babies are born with one or more knots in the umbilical cord. Some knots form during delivery when a baby with a nuchal loop is pulled through the loop. Others form during pregnancy when the baby moves around. Knots occur most often when the umbilical cord is too long, and in identical-twin pregnancies that share a single amniotic sac, when the babies’ cords become entangled. As long as the knot remains loose, it generally does not harm the baby. However, sometimes the knot or knots can be pulled tight, cutting off the baby’s oxygen supply. Cord knots result in miscarriage or stillbirth in 5 percent to 10 percent of cases. During labor and delivery, a tightening knot can cause the baby to have heart rate abnormalities that are detected by fetal monitoring. In some cases, a cesarean delivery may be necessary."
  3. knots in the umbilical cord are very dangerous and about 5 to 10 percent of babies are either miscarried or stillborn. Sometimes what happens is a baby has a nuchal loop (cord around its neck) and the baby literally gets pulled through the loop forming a knot. Umbilical knots are sometimes okay as long as they do not get pulled too tight. It could have been teh reason that your son was born early because he became stressed or his heartrate dropped. Also he was either smaller because he was early or smaller because the knot was causing nutrients to flow slower or less efficiently. Either way you are lucky that he is okay. Or basically what was stated before me
  4. It means that there was an actual knot, not just a loop, in the cord.. If it is tight, it can decrease bloodflow and nourishment to the baby. It could have been there for quite a while before the birth, or just a short time. It could have been loose before labor, and just pulled tight during labor. Can't know for sure. Could be reason for his prematurity, but then again maybe not. Really not poss. to know if it made any differnce to the baby. Occasionally there is a tight knot in the cord earlier in pregnancy that can cause death of ther fetus. The knot gets there when the baby does his sommersaults in the womb. Congratulations on your new son.
  5. It just means there was an actual knot in the cord. Generally this does not cause problems, the cord is filled with Wharton's Jelly which prevents the blood vessels from being compromised. But in some cases it doesn't work. It could be that he wasn't getting quite enough blood which would slow development. It could be that he was just meant to be smaller, or was small because he was early. He could have come early for a variety of reasons. However if he was small for gestational age, and you ate well during pregnancy and your placenta was fine, than it is likely the knot was the problem. However it was not anything you did or didn't do, there is nothing that can be done to prevent or fix it and it is unlikely to happen again if you choose to have more children. It also shouldn't cause any trouble in the long run.
  6. I would say that it is nothing good
  7. Congratulations, If your son was born early then its good he was, having a knot in the umbilical cord is dangerous, your baby was very active and tied a knot which could have cut off the the oxygen, some still born baby's have a knot in the umbilical cord which can result into the reasoning of the still birth, this can happen as your baby is tumbling and turning and you stretch putting your washing on the line or something, this is why when in the last stage of pregnancy women are told not to stretch there arms to full stretch. Yo are very lucky to have a healthy baby, keeping a kick count during the last trimester in case something like this happens. I wish you all the very best.
