Umbilical Cord Wrapping around neck becuase of Lifting arms up?

The other day my mother and sister in law shrieked at me don't lift your arms up like that it will wrap the umbilical cord around you baby's neck! For some reason I think this sounds a like a old wives tale and they were overreacting. Anyone with knowledge on this know? Preferably a nurse or doctor.

  1. Yes, Ive heard it and yes it's an old wives tale.
  2. Very old wives tales. You lift your arms to brush your hair or put on a shirt. There is no fact in this.
  3. i have had 2 kids and i am pregnant now and i used to always lift my arms above my head and never did my babies cords get wrapped around their necks i think it is an old wives tale good luckxxx
  4. I am not a nurse or a dr but in the book pregnancy for dummies and im pretty sure it was also in what to expect when expecting it mentions how untrue this old wives tale is and im 5ft1 so i had my arms up a lot during pregnancy and it wasn't an issue, so don't worry
  5. It is truly an old wive's tale. If you get an ultrasound, you will see that the baby "dances" with the cord through the entire time. It doesn't 'wrap' around its neck by any motion you make, and the only only time doctors worry about it is when the baby is in the birth canal. With all the monitors they have these days, even that is not a problem. Tell them to stop stressing you while you're pregnant. And congratulations on the coming event.
  6. yep thats a load of bull truly one of the most belived tale but 100% not true lifting your arms DOES NOT wrap the cord around the baby's neck that happens by extreme unnecessary movement or just plan bad luck hope this helps
  7. if you ask a nurse or doc this question they may find it amusing. im sure it is an old wives tale and lifting ur arms up is not going to wrap the cord around the baby's neck.
  8. How funny that people STILL say this.
