Cord Blood Stem Cells Information

How many stem cells are found in an adult tissue like cardiac muscle?

What is the avarage number of stem cells in adult tissues? Can we find a number like one in one thousand? if they are very low in number, how can they regenerate tissues and compensate dead cells. As I know cells die and old cells are replaced with new cells in many tissues.

  1. Stem cells have not been found in all tissues, and the "stem cells" that have been isolated in adult tissues may not fit the definition of stem cells. Stem cells must posess (1) self renewal, the ability to keep dividing, and (2) omnipotetency, the ability to become any mature cell type. The adult "stem cells" that have been isolated have yet to be confirmed as such, and may in fact be progenitors cells, with only limited abilities to differentiate into a subset of mature cells, and limited lifetimes of division. So, to finally get back to your original question, it could be zero, no actual stem cells in adult tissues. If those cells do turn out to be actual stem cells, the number is likely very small, perhaps 1 in a million or less, but I think 1 in a 1000 would be way, way, way too high.
