My pom just gave birth, do I let her completely eat the umbilical cord?
I already tied off the umbilical near the skin but severed it two inces from the belly. Now the mom wants to eat the umbilical cord stump, do I let her?

- This is a great question to ask your breeding mentor!
- So much for lunch....LOL I don't know the answer to this--call a vet--it's quicker than waiting for a response here and they'll know the correct answer for sure.
- no! the farthest she can go is an inch from the belly...if she keeps eating it it will cause the intestinse to come out...its pretty nasty..just hold your finger there and let her chew up to it...then just tell her that she cant and get her mind onto another thing
- Leave her alone! She knows what she is doing.....after what you said, you obviously don't! Leave her alone.
- yes, its fine. Dogs don't eat before they give birth, for this very reason. They do it in the wild to try and hide their pups from predators. it's natural Be SURE to get your dog SPAYED after the pups are weaned off her. You need to learn more about dogs, animals in general BEFORE you start breeding, not after.
- I don't think you should let her. It could be very unhealthy. Ask the vet, but do not COMPLETELY trust them. They killed my dog on accident so, don't completely trust them.
- Yes, she will be fine, it is in her instincts to do so...in the VAST majority of cases, the mom knows -just- how far the chew- then stops.
- Why are you breeding when you don't have a clue what you are doing? You've had months to research this stuff! If you need to ask this question here, it is a sign that you don't know anywhere near enough to be breeding. Please go so some serious research on responsible breeding.
