Public Comments
- There are so many arguments for and against stem cell research. Some people who are against it say that it is unethical because A.) You can get the stem cells from aborted fetuses. A lot of people disagree with abortion. This has to do with the "moral status" of the fetus. Is it a person? Does it have a soul? B.) Another way to get stem cells is keeping left over eggs from In-Vitro Fertilization. Some people think that they should be used to create more chances for pregnancy, or given to other couples (Egg-sharing.) C.) Yet another way to get stem cells is Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer. It is taking an egg, removing the nucleus, and putting in the nucleus from a somatic (body) cell and letting it reproduce. This is probably the most controversial method, because it is very similar to the process of cloning. Most people who are against cloning are opposed to it, because they do not believe we have the right to create life. There are several countries that do not allow stem cell research: Germany, France, and Ireland for example. The United States permits experiments on already existing lines. Private Sectors can create new cell lines, but receive no funding. The UK permits experimenting on stem cells, even if the embryos where created specifically for research purposes, but they have an authority that monitors these experiments. (The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority)
