Cord Blood Stem Cells Information

Why are adult stem cells difficult to grow in the laboratory compared to embryonic stem cells?

One of the disadvantages of using adult stem cells for stem cell therapy is that they are difficult to grow in the laboratory, could anybody tell me why this is? Thanks

  1. embryonic stem cells have not been 'programmed' to do anything so with the right conditions they can grow into whatever you want them to, adult stem cells also have DNA so that makes them want to grow into something and it is hard to tell them not to do that
  2. yes, emryonic stem cells have a sort of "potential" on what they could be. depending on the conditions, of course. Adult stem cells require a specific condition to grow, because they already have a sort of "base" for growth, and if you don't try to build off that base, it can't grow. hope this helped a bit :)
