  1. I think it is a good idea, not only does science have many ways of using it now just think about the future
  2. Well you have to look at it like this, it costs a lot what are the odds you will need it and what did people do 50-100 years ago when it was unheard of
  3. i was going to but realised it's another way for them to make money off me.
  4. Do it. The hospital or your doctor is able to provide you information on where to have it stored. I wish I had done it, you wont regret having it, but you'd regret not having it. In the unfortunate event of a blood disease, then you'd be able to use it to save the life of your child or someone else. Do it.
  5. I was going to do it, But the prices for doing so were outragoues. Try www.viacord.com "My doc told me bout this on"
  6. From what I been researching it is a great idea to bank, within -8-12 years we should understand how to use it. It could help repair your child, family members, and strangers. I highly recommend it! Wish mine was kept.
  7. I think its too expensive - we just put ours in the general blood bank for anyone to use. That one is free.
  8. This is an old story, but you might find it interesting. A woman had another baby in order to get cord blood to save its older sister's life. http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9C0CE3DB1E31F934A35757C0A966958260
  9. Bank Cord is a wonderful thing to do. It keeps those stems cells that are totally free from killing babies in a bank for future use for your child if he/she should ever need marrow or life saving cancer treatments. It can be a little costly, but it is worth it 100% www.kidshealth.org/parent/pregnancy_newborn/pregnancy/cord_blood.html pediatrics.about.com/od/agesandstages/i/cord_blood_bank.htm Google it youll find lots of sites..
  10. It seems like a great idea but it is expensive to bank it. If you want to donate for the use of another person that is at no cost and something you have to set up yourself. But we checked into and the costs were outrageous.
  11. I did it.....and the security is priceless. Even if you think there will be no reason to need it, they come up with more things every year that the cord blood can cure. Another tip....banking one child's blood can help all the other kids. I did my first two and didn't do my 3rd. I won't do my fourth either. We can all use the blood. If you decide to do it, use someone very credible, like Viacord. And, if you're extra nice, you'll use me as a reference....I'll get $100! For your peace of mind, it's priceless. Congrats on the pregnancy!!
  12. I think if you can afford it, great! but it's really expensive ($4,000 total for like 21 years of storage), so for most people that money is better spend on food, diapers, college savings etc. If your baby is a minority or rare combination, like with an African American mom and a Mexican dad for example, then it might be even more worth it because those cells will be much harder to match if you ever need it. Or also if you have a family history of certain diseases like leukemia. donating them to a bank for free is a great option... unfortunately it's not offered in very many places and mostly only research hospitals will help you collect it for free at the birth.
  13. DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! we did, and i am so glad. it is totally worth the money. we used the new england cord blood bank (don't know where you live). they are all about the same price, at least they were when we researched it. they'll send you a package, and you bring it with you to delivery. make sure you tell the doc and the nurse as soon as you get there. when the baby is born, they (doc/nurse) fill the containers with the cord blood. they return it to you, and you get it back to the company. most offer a courier service, so you just call when the baby is born and they come pick it up. it's best to use a private bank. there are going to be more and more ways they can use these cells to cure diseases. knowing that you have another option if your son or daughter gets very sick -- that alone is worth the price. you'll have to fill out an extensive medical history before you get the kit, so best to do it all asap so you have it all ready when s/he comes. good luck!
