cord blood banking....?
What do you think about banking your babys cord blood, i know it can be very useful, should you need it, but do you think its worth the money?

- I did it once and I'm still paying on it. I spoke with a few Maternity doctors and most of them said that after the baby is born, they take it for testing anyway. Almost like being an organ donor and dying in an accident, they take them and donate them if they are healthy anyway.
- We talked about it, but didn't do it. I think though if anything ever happens to my little guy I will probably want to kill myself if we could have cured it with cord blood stem cells----wish we had done it no matter what the cost.
- That's a very personal decision. Some people can afford it easily - and it's a great idea to do it if it doesn't put a financial strain on you. Other people have a hard enough time making ends meet for their growing family, and it is not as practical of an expenditure. If you can afford it - go for it. It's like having an extra little insurance policy on your baby's life.
- my hospital does this free of charge if you apply to do it otherwise it gets thrown away, i think its a great idea and well worth while, i know alot of NHS hospital do it free of charge and it mya be worth talking to you midwife about it, unless you are wanting the blood banked for your use in future then wouldn't see much point in you paying to have it stored? hope all goes well for you. Good luck
- Pros and Con's on cord banking. Con is def the price, but some of the companies here in the Midwest..Viacord, CBR are offering discount programs and payment plans over time to ease the upfront cost shock. Pros! I personally know of TWO successful cases using cells from cord blood in humans...both were leukemia patients. One was an 8 year old child and the first successfull adult patient (female 34) happened just within the last few years here in the states. We all pray that our children will be healthy and happy, and most of the time they are. You have to ask yourself what you can afford really and talk to your doctor about your family risk factors for illness. If you choose not to bank for yourself, you can still help! I BEG ALL MOMS TO THINK ABOUT DOING THIS!!! You can "donate" your cord blood for free! Lifesource in the states takes donations of cord blood for their bank. These collected donations are simple, don't hurt you or the baby (as they are done after the baby is born!) and can help save the life of sick children. Look into donating if you can't bank for yourself, you may be saving a life with your donation. God Bless you and your little one.
