Cord Blood Stem Cells Information

What happens to the umbilical cord inside the baby after it is born?

I am dissecting the fetal pig right now in my A.P. bio class and i noticed that the umbilical cord is still attached on the inside, so what happens after it is born and the part outside of the body is cut off and discarded? Nurse JC has the best answer!! So it like just attaches itselft to the intestine?? Its AMAZING how our body does that!

  1. if i am not mistaken in a human the entire cord comes out with the placenta and the baby
  2. With Women/babies: I would think it goes to biohazard waste. There are some hospitals that allow to you donate it. You can also store it in a cord bank so down the line if your baby had a medical issue you would have it its about $1300 to bank it and then X monthly.
  3. it does not dissolve.lol it is actually big..sorry i got off on a placenta thing ...you can have them save it they save some companies use for shampoos etc..i do believe.
  4. one end is attached to placenta one end to baby , it is cut in the middle and clamped, the end that is attached to placenta is disposed of and the stump with clamp attached that is left on baby is left to dry up and drop off,
  5. The part that is 'inside' the baby is actually the intestines. The whole - belly button closes off but what was inside is the intestine.
  6. It's connected to the placenta which the mother delivers after she has her baby...atleast that's how it works with humans, I'm sure it's the same with pigs..
