  1. My son was about five weeks before his fell off. My daughter lost hers before we even left hospital. They're all different. As long as it doesn't smell too foul or have a red, angry looking area around it, don't worry.
  2. It can take as long as 2 weeks to 5-6 weeks. it depends on the baby, they are all different. I think my nephews fell off when he was around 3 weeks to a month. Theres nothing to worry about, but if it isn't off by 2 months(im sure it will be though) you might want to go get it seen.
  3. You know a lot of people on here say their docs say it can take up to 8 weeks. Every study I have seen suggests an average of 8 days, and while some come off sooner or later than that I really don't think 8 weeks is normal. My first son took about 8 days, my second was 4 days. http://nursinglibrary.org/Portal/main.aspx?pageid=4024&sid=10081 Cord separation time was statistically significantly different (alcohol group 9.8 days, natural drying group 8.16 days; t=8.9, p=<.001). Mothers described similar comfort with cord care and relief with cord separation. Costs of alcohol while in hospital were greater than natural drying. http://content.karger.com/ProdukteDB/produkte.asp?Aktion=ShowAbstract&ArtikelNr=47182&Ausgabe=227461&ProduktNr=224215 With regard to cord separation time the best results were obtained with salicylic sugar powder (5.6 ± 2.3 days) and green clay powder (6.7 ± 2.2 days). Both forms of treatment proved to be more effective (p < 0.05) than all the others. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/umbilical-cord/PR00046 Taking care of the stump Your baby's umbilical cord stump will change from yellowish green to brown to black as it dries out and eventually falls off — usually within 12 to 15 days after birth. In the meantime, treat the area gently. * Keep the stump clean. Parents were once instructed to swab the stump with rubbing alcohol after every diaper change. Researchers now say the stump may heal faster if left alone. If the stump becomes dirty or sticky, wash it with soap and water and dry it well. Hold a clean, absorbent cloth around the stump or use the low setting on a hair dryer, being careful to hold the dryer a safe distance from the baby. * Keep the stump dry. Expose the stump to air to help dry out the base. Keep the front of your baby's diaper folded down to avoid covering the stump. Change wet or soiled diapers quickly to prevent irritation. In warm weather, dress your baby in a diaper and T-shirt to improve air circulation. * Stick with sponge baths. Sponge baths may be most practical during the healing process. When the stump falls off, you can bathe your baby in a baby tub or sink. * Let the stump fall off on its own. Resist the temptation to pull off the stump yourself — even if it's hanging on by only a thread. http://www.americanpregnancy.org/firstyearoflife/umbilicalcord.htm The umbilical cord provided nourishment to your baby throughout your pregnancy. Now he or she has a purplish-blue stump that is about a half inch to an inch long. It will take some time (approximately 2 weeks but occasionally up to 8 weeks) before the stump dries up and falls off. It will take a little care and attention to ensure that both infection and irritation are avoided.
  4. I have twins. One umbillical cord stump I cleaned with alcohol every day and the other I left alone. Never touched it. And made sure it was kept dry. The baby's who's was left alone fell off WAY faster than the other one. In fact, the other one got all gross and pus filled and stuff. So with my future children I am leaving the stump alone. So maybe if you left it alone it would fall off faster? There is something that the pedi can do too...cortarize it or something. They briefly mentioned it to me once.
  5. with my first baby it took pretty close to a month before it fell off...everything is fine im sure........she has a small outie now though..dont know if that has anything to do with it.....lol....oh and my baby will be one month on the 7th also!! lol...but this is my second and hers fell off when she was 3 or 4 days old...
  6. Yes I didnt think my daughters would ever fall off. It took about a month. Then after you still have to clean til the whole closes.
