Cord Blood Stem Cells Information

Cord Blood Donation?

Donation was not possible when my son was born because the hospital didn't offer it and am thinking about donating my daughter's cord blood. Has anyone done this? Any thoughts? Yep really am talking about donation. Banking is really expensive and there's no evidence that it can really help and no long term research as to storage degradation

  1. I tried, but couldn't because they didn't know in advance. They have to have some kit there waiting. I think it is a great thing to do, but just make sure your O.B. and the hospital know that it is your intention because when you go in the day of labor, they won't let you just decide that day.
  2. This is actually a form of stem cell donation that is used for research into cures for various diseases but it is your choice. It is one of the only ways to get stem cells without killing the embryo.
  3. Are you talking about donating, or storing? Storing - don't waste your money supporting big companies who cannot follow through on their promises. I'll say more on that if you come back and write that you mean store. Or have a look in my answers, there's a recent one about that. Donate - good for you! Look into it! I tried, but wasn't eligible, they're fussier about that than they are about blood donations. I'd had acupuncture within the last year, so they said essentially 'thanks but no'.
  4. I think it's a great idea. I know it can be pretty costly for them to conserve it for you, but if you're willing then I think it's great!
  5. No they just wisked our sons away. Probably sold it for some research
  6. We are storing our son's cord blood. The amount of money that they charge is worth the added insurance to us.
  7. As the lucky recipient of a cord blood transplant, I am glad that more and more people trying to donate their cord blood. It was my goal to influence at least one person to donate. You can probably ask your dr for more information in case he/she knows of an easier way, but here's what I know. Because of what I went through, I am unable to conceive children of my own so I'm glad that I can help others by spreading the word. I've attached a link where you can find a list of collecting hospitals. http://www.marrow.org/ABOUT/NMDP_Network/Cord_Blood_Banks/CB_Participating_Hospitals/nmdp_cord_blood_hospitals.pl "If you are unable to locate your delivering hospital in the list below, you may contact Cryobanks International at 1-800-869-8608. Donations are accepted from anywhere in the Continental United States. Donors must meet Cryobanks International's eligibility requirements and register with Cryobanks International between their 28th and 35th week of pregnancy." - This is where they'll send you a kit to bring to the hospital when you deliver. You'll work with your dr to plan this out. Please encourage others to donate if possible. You never know what future technology is capable of with these cells.
