Question about umbilical cord?

My baby is 13 days old today (1 week tomorrow) and his umbilical cord still hasn't fallen off. I thought it would only take 7 to 10 days. Did anyone else have a baby whose umbilical cord didn't fall off for this long or longer? Is there anything I need to do if it doesn't fall off after a certain time.

  1. It will fall off when its ready :) dont worry! just make sure you keep it very dry and clean. Good luck
  2. I don't think that is unusual. It will fall off when it's ready.
  3. It will eventually fall off. You should just allow it to come off naturally.
  4. just leave it alone...it'll fall off when its ready. The majority fall off within that time frame youstated but there is nothing to worry about if it takes longer. All you have to do daily is wet a Q-tip with water to clean it. They have proven that using alcohol is no longer neccessary...just water will do.
  5. it took bout 3 weeks for both of my kids to loose theres
  6. my sons took 17 days- like everyone else has or will say- clean and dry.
  7. My son's umbillical cord took its sweet old time falling off too. I wouldn't be overly concerned. What I did was to wipe it with a q-tip and a little bit of rubbing alcohol every time I changed his diaper and gave his little tummy some air time to help it dry up!
  8. It can take 3-4 weeks for some babies....just make sure you are cleaning it with alcohol and q-tips every diaper change...this helps it dry up faster...the more you can saturate it with alcohol and let it dry the faster it will come off.
  9. my baby's fell of on day 17. found it in the blanket. not that I purposefully kept that "milestone" in mind, it just happened on the day another event I clearly remember happened.
  10. It will fall off on its own, just keep it clean use alcohol swabs those little square pads, and be sure to keep it dry.
  11. Dont worry about it some fall off after 10 days some takes time .just make sure its clean and dry.It will come off eventually..congrats with the new baby..
  12. It's not uncommon for it to stay on for 2 weeks.. I bet it will fall off anyday now. Has it at least loosened? As long as it looks like it's healing.. you're fine. ;-)
  13. My daughter's cord came off prematurely at 10 days... according to the doctor I would have been ready in 3-4 days... but because it came off early, it was infected as well for week or so.. the doctor said she would have an "outie" belly button and she does... So good luck with your little ones
  14. My baby's fall off at about 14 days. it was not drying and then my dr told me to put a little bit of alchol on it, it fall off within 3-4 days of alchol application.
  15. If you keep cleaning it with the alcohol swabs, it will fall off, my sons didn't fall off till he was a lil more than two weeks.
  16. My son's took about ten days. Believe it or not but our pediatrician said we could gently wiggle it without hurting him. I was somewhat skeptical and did it a little gentler than he did in the doctor's office. If in doubt call your pediatrician. Each doctor is different, as ours said we don't need to use alcohol around the base. Make sure you are only sponge bathing your baby too. You don't want to submerge him in a tub just yet.
  17. mine took between 3-14 days all 3 of my children were different but i used the green rubbing alcohol and put it on a q-tip and patted around the base of the cord during diaper changing time ... it helped it to dry out and kept it from smelling....hope this helped some...
  18. hi, my sons didnt fall off until he was 3 weeks old so dont worry, my health visitor said its fine, congratulations on the baby
  19. both of my kids took about 3 weeks. Just keep it dry and clean. It will fall off.
