  1. Different companies charge you a different amount for the storage (per year) you should check out all the different sites before you decide...what they offer for the money...speak with your physician and the hospital well in advance about your decision, or they may just throw it out anyway... Remember, if it is to expensive for you, you can donate it to the National Cord Bank (in USA) and it can save many lives...by direct use or by research use...Don't let them throw this life blood away, even if you can't afford to store it for your families use, it can still save many people with no cost to you...
  2. I am actually looking into this too and actually just tlaked to my doc friday about it...Normally its about $1,500 to do it when you are in the hospital(yea they have payment plans available) and then about 100-150 every year after that for the storage..... The doctor recommend that we do this because of our family history, esp my husbands brother having cancer at age 7, but i would def talk to ur doctor about it....I think it will be a good thing no matter what...better safe then sorry! Hope this helps! if you want you can e-mail me and when i get home today i can get the details of it form info i got in the mail and from the doc last friday and give you more detail!
  3. DO IT! it is expensive but soo worth it. when my daughter was born, we lived in boston, so we used the new england cord blood bank. we looked at viacord, but i felt they were too much into the hard sell -- too business-y. the thing about the cord blood stem cells is that while currently we know they work for only a few diseases (leukemia, for example), the research is so abundant that there are new uses on the immediate horizon. a 2 year old with cerebral palsy was recently given an experimental cell transplant with the cord blood his parents banked, and he was improving within 5 days. he is expected to be symptom free by age 7. chances are you will never need the cells, and i certainly hope you don't, but you want to have them should you need them! if you have the 1200-1500 bucks, it is absolutely worth it. i can't recommend it enough. congrats and good luck.
