Can I get into med school?

I recently decided I wanted to go into medicine. I am a molecular biosciences/biotechnology major. I started a company (a Med Spa) which took up all my time so my GPA fell to a 2.5 (I am now a junior). I scored a 39 out of 45 on my MCAT. Do I still have a chance of getting into medical school?

  1. Your GPA is quite low - you should re-take all classes with a C or lower to quickly improve your GPA. That is the fastest way to improve it. You may want to get involved in research if you can - try to get published if possible. You will probably need to put in a lot of extra and hard work, but if you want to do it, you can.
  2. While your MCAT is where most med schools would love to see it, your GPA is far, far lower than US med schools want. So much lower that, even with your high MCAT, you will probably face difficulty. You *must* raise your GPA, if med school is truly your goal. I'm thinking if you can at least get your last few semesters into the range they normally want to see from your overall GPA, you'll stand a shot, even though your overall GPA will still be below their ideal. So for your last few semesters, try to get above a 3.3, and actually, as high over that as you can. Go speak to your school's pre-med advisor to discuss what other things (research, volunteer work, etc.) med schools want to see on your application, so that, other than your GPA, you look like the ideal candidate on paper.
