Umbilical cord.....?
What is the deal with people wanting to wait to cut the cord until it stops pulsating? What does it do or not do?

- I have never heard of anything like that and I have 2 kids.
- Waiting allows the baby to get ALL of his cord blood, roughly 2/3rds of his blood would still be in the cord prior to cutting.
- i have NO clue
- people like to wait as they cord is still sending blood to the baby and other nutrients and once the cord stops pulsing then everything have gone through! the cord was cut straight away with my kids and they are just fine i think its down to your opion whether you want it ir not
- If its pulsating it is still pumping blood. It keeps you from loosing too much blood during birth.
- makes sure that when they cut it the blood doesn't squirt everywhere losing blood and/or to make sure the mother or baby doesn't get an infection that would be carried through the blood to either one of them
- People think the baby is getting extra blood supply from mom and don't want to cut the connection until the blood has stopped transferring... however, if the cord's not cut or at least clamped within about 30 seconds the baby can actually start to lose blood.
- doctors say that they wait so long for the same reason woman keep their cords after having a baby. The cord blood is vital for baby. it is enriched with vitamins that baby needs to grow. Oddly enough, these are the same vitamins and minerals that are found in breastmilk. the longer the cord is connected to baby the healthy baby will be.
- The unbilical cord feeds the baby from the placenta, it also has its own blood supply which is probably why they want to wait till it stops pulsating so that cutting it does not cause blood loss.
- letting the cord stop pulsate on its own, gives the baby as much of the blood from the placenta before being clamped and cut....to my knowledge there is no medical reasons for one way or another, but personal prefferences!
- I have been looking a lot into this an I will be having a water birth which will allow for this to be able to happem. You want as much blood and nutrients to flow into the baby. Why waste it?
- never heard of it
