Science background wanting to break into business?

Well, for awhile I desperately wanted a career in medicine, and went for it full throttle. Did a Bio major and a chem, psychology minor during undergrad. Then followed that with masters in Molecular Medicine. I received good grades but after taking more graduate science classes, shadowing more docs, and interviewing at medical schools, I realized that I never really was doing it because I passionate but rather because I was caught up with the image and prestige. I now am interested in doing what I am truly passionate about, which is starting my own biz one day. I know I am years away..I guess my question is where do I start? could I land an accounting job or entry level position with my background? Or is there a better option? I'm completely lost....

  1. Be glad that you found that medicine is not for you now instead of being 200K+ in debt 4 years from now! :-) I was pre-med for a long time and switched to pre-law and then switched to pre-vet med during grad school myself, so I know how it goes. I think your background sounds very strong for going into something business related, especially for your own start up. Are you thinking like a biotech/pharm type company? You could maybe get your feet wet in something with industry. Vaccines and big pharma in both human and veterinary medicine are big business. Public health is also a big deal too with all sorts of crazy stuff out there: bird flu, SARS, you name it. Any chance of going to law school and doing something like environmental or toxic tort law? That's pretty big these days. Anyways, I don't think you need to be an accountant as I'm fairly certain you need a degree in accounting, but I do think if you enquire at some major companies like Monsanto, Novartis, Fort Dodge, Merck, Merial, etc, you'll probably get some bites.
