  1. they save the umbilical cord...in case one of ur family memebers or ur baby has some kind of sickness/cancer, the cord may help them survive. And it was around few thousands the last time i checked.
  2. I banked my children's cord blood with Cord Blood Regsitry. It is a bit expensive and many say unnecessary but with a lot of history of blood cancers in my family I feel better knowing I did it. Companies have different costs but for CBR it was about $1500 at first and then about $120 a year after that. Here is a website that will answer a lot of your questions. http://www.cordblood.com/
  3. It's a storage facility for your baby's blood that is in his umbilical cord. You can either store it for your own use (and your baby's use), or you can donate it for others to use. It's one of the rare places that stem cells are found, that's why it's so useful. These cells are used to reverse affects of different diseases, pathogens, or deficiencies in your baby, or family members matching the profile of your baby. Some people are against "stem cell research" but rest assured, you baby's cord blood won't be used to "clone the next human" or anything, lol. It's simply used for reversal of diseases, pathogens, or deficiencies in your baby. It's quite a great thing. The best to do is just talk to your doc about it. He'll be able to inform you of facilities in your area, and the facilities will be able to give you pricing, as it is different in different areas and depending on how much you want to store, where, why, etc., etc. Good luck! I think it's a great thing you're thinking of doing!
  4. It costs about $1500 (that's just for the service). You need to ask your OB what they charge to collect. You also need to find out if the company's courier has a carrying fee as well. Also, if you do enroll, many companies, such as ViaCord will charge you $150 if you decide not to bank. But if you are going to enroll, you need to do it soon. Cord Blood banking is the preservation of the stem cells and cord blood in your baby's umbilical cord. There are many things that the cord blood can do in a time of crisis (cancer in the family, etcetera). You need to check and see what the probability of the cord blood actually helping your family in the event of a crisis. Also, storage is about $900-$1200 a year. Good luck.
  5. I live in Aus, don't know where you live so it might be different. I wanted to do it when my daughter was born but didn't. It can be as much as$30,000 dollars for over seas. It costs about $700 dollars to collect, process and store one cord blood unit in Australia; and around $16,000 dollars to provide a suitable cord blood from the ACBB for transplantation. You have to be in a hospital that does cord blood banking and hope that you give birth during the operating hours something like normal business hours I think. They collect about 90 mls (less than 1/2 a cup). This is 10 times less than is usually used for a bone marrow transplant. It can be used later down the track for your child if she/he needs it, hopefully she/he doesn't. Used for cancers, diseases mainly leukemia. If you look it up on the Internet you might find out lots more to where you live. Good luck
