Questions about Cord Blood Banking?

I want to save my baby's cord blood but I want to find that cheapest way. I heard that my doctor can take it and the blood bank can come pick it up from the hospital and I dont have to go through a third party like Viacord for more money? How long in advance to I have to pay for it and is it a hard process?

  1. My son was born in January and we used CBR (cordblood.com). Prior to delivery, we told the dr. that we are going to be storing the blood. You can either get a kit from CBR (for free) or check with your hospital to see if they have them available. Once your baby is born, the dr. will do their part in making sure the blood is drawn properly. CBR provides you with a shipping label in the kit. Just call the number provided on the label, and they come pick it up from the hospital. They also have it where you don't have to pay everything up front. We were able to work out monthly payments under $100. hope this helped...Congrats
  2. I researched that when I was pregnant too and came to the conclusion that for the rare amount of times it's used the cost didn't justify it. If your baby gets sick the first course of action is to go to the parents for help (after all you both have the genes). Statistically the need for the baby's core blood isn't hospitals first choice for help. You should consult your family Dr. or pediatrician as to the liklihood of something being medically wrong with your child. There is a bank in Alberta that is suppose to be free to store it you just have to pay for the delivery of the sample.
