Cord Blood Stem Cells Information

Anyone know of any Cord Blood Banking places in Northern Ireland? Or how I could find out?

I'm due my second baby in November and would like to save the cord blood from this baby as I keep hearing how important and helpful it could be in years to come in fighting against fetal diseases.

  1. Congratulations and I think your decision is a very good one. The only information I know about this is because my friend wanted to donate cord blood here in Northern Ireland last year. I don't know if it is different for different hospitals here but in Antrim Area there was no facilities to do this at the time. I think she had asked her midwives about it. If she had wanted to keep it she would have had to pay for a private company to collect and store it. So I'd ask your midwives and/or consultant about any facilities. I'm sure they could put you into contact with a private firm if that is what you want too. There are several listed on the internet too.
  2. Hi, congratulations, I dont think there are any available, you have to contact a private company who will do it for you and I think it costs around £1100 but would definately be worth it in the future, its something I have thought about aswell after reading about stem cells etc.. go to google and search there, hopefully you'll find what you are looking for Could you let us know if you find out as I live in N.I aswell, thanks and good luck
  3. I'm pregnant at the moment (33 weeks) and went to a recent antinatal appointment and this subject came up. The midwife said in no uncertain terms that it was a complete rip off. She said there isn't any research that proves that collecting stem cells from the umbilical cord and storing them will help. She made a good point in saying that if you want cells from your baby why from the cord and not directly from your child in saliva form or any other form. For someone to charge you thousands of pounds for something that isn't proved is ludicrous.
