Have you heard of umbilical cord blood banking?
Would you do it? or it's just all business?

- I would do it if we could afford it. Its around $125 or more a month to bank it. I donated it from both of my kids though.
- We did it cord blood can help save the lives of the up to the babies great grand parents! We pay 65 dollars a month to keep it and i'm glad we did!!
- When my daughter had her first son, she thought about the blood banking. She had cancer a few years earlier and the weighed the odds of her baby having problems. the only thing, at that time, the blood would be used for leukemia. the cost was great. after discussing with oncologist and ob/gyn, she decided not to.
- i looked into it a little bit because thought it would be a good backup plan in case my baby needed it as it grew up and i found out for one its quite expensive but they dont just save the blood for your baby they also use it for science research and that weirded me out. i'm not sure why. i perasonally got a weird vibe.
- I did it. I donated it to the hospital which is at no cost to me. The greatest part is that I get to use a cord if I need to. (not mine if it's taken, but one that matches) I figured, hey what am I going to do with it?! Lol. I wouldn't pay for it though.
- I have heard of it, but after doing a little research on it, they say there is no garuntee that you can use your own families cord blood. So, if you combine that with the cost, I would not do it. Also, it's too much like playing God to me. But that;s just one Mama's opinion.
- At the moment, it's all business. There is great potential in cord blood because of all the stem cells in it, but it's very rare for it to be used right now. Medicine hasn't found all of the techniques to use it yet. Plus, the private banks charge you about $2000 to originally take the blood, and then so much to keep it every month. If you don't pay, they through it out. There is a national registry in the US where the cord blood will be collected and stored for free, but it's kept in a collective, and anyone and everyone has the opportunity to use it if it's a match to them, though your child will be eligible to use it if the need arises. But it's up to you what you do.
- The blood in the umbilical cord belongs to the baby. Your OB/MW should allow the cord to remain intact until it stops pulsating. This way the baby received all of his blood and will have less problems with his respiratory and cardiac systems. If this blood is "good for another" doesn't it stand to reason that it's good for your baby?
- yes i have. the umb bank can serve many purposes. when my mom was dying from cancer we found out that the cord from the baby can be used for bone marrow transplant. they can use it to fight diabetes. they can use it to fight cancer. there are many uses. even if you need a transfusion the blood from this can be used.
- Nope, I wouldn't do it. I would prefer that the cord cutting be delayed and the baby get all of its blood. Studies have shown that this results in fewer cases of newborn anemia.
