Two day old boxers umbilical cord bleeding?
My baby boxers were born yesterday. Today one of the little boys umbilical cord is bleeding at the place where it connects to the tummy. Mommy will not stop licking and pulling at the cord(she is a compulsive licker as it is). What can I do to help the mommy quit licking without hurting her or puppies. The vet says that iodine helps in the drying process but we are afraid of an allergic reaction of either mommy or babies. I could put some neosporin on it but i'm afraid this might make her lick more being something foreign on her babies. Need help!!!

- Call your vet back and tell him just what you told us.
- I would use the iodine on a q-tip. take the pup away from the mom when she isn't feeding it for a day or two. Keep it warm and snuggle but make sure it gets fed with the rest. it should heal on it's own if left alone for a bit.
- Call your vet. If it starts to bleed too much it would not take long for the pup to bleed to death.
- It will not harm the pup for you to take the pup away from mom for a few hours. If the cord is still long enough then get some dental floss unflavored and tir the cord. Tehn put the iodine on the end of the cord. Allow it to dry and then in a hour or so give the pup back to mom. The little amount of iodine you will put on the cord will not harm mom or baby. Make sure you keep this pup warm while away from mom. Check to make sure the cord has clotted enougnh. If you have to repeat the iodine again.
