Is it okay for the umbilical cord to bleed?
My son is 2 weeks old tomorrow, his umbilical cord has not fallen off yet, and it bleeds sometimes. The blood never gushes, but it will... ooze? out from around the stump. It doesnt seem to bother him, but there is an awful lot more blood than I'd like. Is this normal? he doesn't see the doctor untill next friday. Should I take him in earlier, or is the bleeding okay?

- i would take him in, at least to put any doubt out of your mind. the umbilical cord should not be bleeding now.
- Anytime you are concerned over the health of such a little one its best to be safe and get things checked out. Better safe than sorry you know. At least give your doctor a call.
- Yes it is normal. My son had this as well and the Doctor said it was fine no problem. Keep cleaning it. I am sure it will safe to wait but you could call the nurse to just get her opinion. My son's ambilical cord took 4 weeks to fall off we went at three weeks and they put something to dry it up more and it took another week after that to finally fall off. I guess it is normal from what doc said and even after it fell off it was oozy and gunky in his belly button. I would try to clean it out and it just come back - that was normal too and that took a few weeks or so to stop and now his belly button looks cute as can be. Congratulations on your son - if you don't already have a son - he will melt your heart - more than daughters will. I have two older girls and just had my first boy 7 months ago. Eat him up!!! - Being a nurse for 28 years I never saw a real issue/problem with a umbilical cord of a baby in the first 6 weeks. The umbilical cord is fading and will fall off. If your inner voice as a parent says something is not right, always follow through and seek professional help. Listening to your inner voice will save you a lot of unnecessary suffering.
