any cat midwives around?
My cat suki had her second (and last) litter of kittens 3 days ago. She gave birth with absolutely no problems the first time, and didn't need my help at all, apart from emotional support, but this time it was a little more difficult, though nothing major. Unlike the first time, she didn't chew off the umbilical cord right to the stomach for all of the kittens (maybe wasn't hungry enough?) and I thought she would do it in her own time once she'd rested a bit. Well, to cut things short, I now have about 3 or 4 kittens with umbilical cords about 2cm long, but which have dried up. What I want to know (and please state your sources for this) is whether I can cut the umbilical cords shorter without making them bleed or hurting the kittens, and if so, how? I also want to know whether they will eventually shrivel up or fall off naturally like they do in lambs if I leave them alone? What would you suggest? okies, thank you for the info ^_^ and yes, sadly this will be her last litter :( I will get her speyed as soon as the kittens are weaned...

- Don't cut them. They will dry up and fall off. If this is your cat's second litter, you really need to read up on spaying. It's very bad for your cat to keep having litters and the world has way too many cute fuzzy kittens who will die because they have no home. http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=1&cat=1364&articleid=925
- they will fall off by themselves so i would leave it alone
- I've had many pets who have had litters, Dogs, cats guinea pigs - lots leave the cord to dry up and fall off - if you start tampering with it it could lead to infection - mum cat will take care of them - cats have done it with out the help of kitty midwives for centuries. the cord can take a couple of weeks to drop off. All the best with the kitties
- they will dry up and drop off by themselves. do not try to cut them...the mother cat will probably take care of them herself when she grooms the kittens.
- you are VERY irresponsible to allow her to get pregnant twice. once could be considered a mistake but TWICE! Geesh! Do you think that there are not enough unwanted kittens in this world? go to a shelter and see how many unwanted animals there are and then think about all the more kittens you are adding to this population.
- Don't do anything... It should dry by itself and eventually fall off....
- Like everybody else has said, let it dry up, it will fall off by itself.
- Don't cut them, they will shrivel of an fall off. Some cat breeders dip them in alcohol which is supposed to help them dry and fall off faster, please don't do this either as there is a risk of infection. Let nature take its course and eventually you will have some very cute, umbilical cord free kittens. It is the same as lambs! Cats dont always chew all the umbilical cord of. Good luck
- leave them alone.they will fall off
- hiya, they will dry up and fall off naturally, dont cut them.
