What happens to the umbilical cord?
when a woman gives birth and the doctor cuts the umbilical cord from the baby, what happens to the rest of it in the mother?

- It is attached to the placenta. When the placenta is expelled, the remainder of the cord comes with it. Typically occurs within 20 minutes of birth.
- I believe that the umbilical cord is removed with the afterbirth and disposed of. I remember the doctor kind of pulling the rest of the umbilical cord and then hearing this plump sound when the after birth fell out into a bucket like thing he was holding.
- After you deliver your baby you have to deliver the placenta. The placenta is what the umbilical cord is connected to at the opposite end. So, I guess the answer is - you push it out. If you are pregnant it might do you some good to read up on Labor and Delivery. Not trying to be rude, but if you don't know that, then there's a whole lot more you need to be aware of.
- It is delivered with the placenta.
- its attached to the placenta and goes with it when the mother pushes out the placenta
- It is delivered with the placenta and discarded as medical waste. Which is pretty sad considering that the blood contained in the umbilical cord can be used to fight many diseases and cancers. Please consider donating it. Its completely free! After you are done delivering the placenta, the doctor extracts the blood from the cord and stores it in a few vials. The vials are sent to a cord blood bank. The cord blood contains stem cells that can be used to fight many diseases. You have to fill out a lenghy medical questionare ahead of time. You also have to let your doctor and hospital know that you plan to donate. I registered about two months before my due date. The satisfaction of knowing that the "medical waste" may someday save a life was very rewarding. Good luck!
- It comes out with the placenta.
- I can't believe you didn't know the answer to this question. Did you really think that all just stays in there?? lol...
- It gets delivered with the placenta.
- As others have said it gets delivered with the placenta and disposed as medical waste. You can pay to have your child's umbilical cord stored to heal your child in the of chance he/she contract certain deceases (I believe Leukemia is one of them). I cost a good chunk of money, but if your child is deathly ill I'm sure you thank yourself for it.
- its cut from the baby and the rest of it is attached to the placenta which is expelled shortly after birth. this really was a dumb question and u must be a child. dont they teach this crap in school?
