- I work in a lab where cord blood is very important to our research, but this is a very odd and broad question. I think you're talking about what the differences are between normal blood and cord blood, and the major difference is the increased number of leukocytes (white blood cells) in cord blood. The stem cells in cord blood are found in adults as well, they're just more common in cord blood.
- Cord blood stem cells are more immature than stem cells form the bone marrow. They have longer telomeres and higher ability to regenerate injured tissue. Cord blood stem cells also are much more angiogenic (they make more blood vessels in areas lacking oxygen) in comparison to bone marrow derived stem cells. Cord blood mononuclear cells have higher numbers of CD34 stem cells but also higher activity. A discussion regarding cord blood stem cells and comparing it to bone marrow stem cells can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGdehdRApb0 additionally, better discussion is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6CP-OL1Kuc if you are curious to see a patient treated iwth cord blood stem cells for autism, the stem cell clinic Cellmedicine has posted up a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIgDUfjWAM4
