1. In the 1970's. The first reference I could find was this one: Prindull G, Prindull B, Meulen N. Haematopoietic stem cells (CFUc) in human cord blood. Acta Paediatr Scand. 1978 Jul;67(4):413-416. There were some other papers around that time that suggested cord blood derived stem cells. Note that adult stem cell transplants were already being performed by then.
