2. Dear Sir/Madam, Its purely a personal choice right now. Pharma companies are known to create hypes. Several such earlier ones have gone down the drain; its only that this one is very expensive. True there is some potential in it but so is the case about buying land on moon/mars! Also there are chances that we may be able to derive stem cells from other parts of the body. In medicine there is a famous saying that "only prescribe drugs when they come out of journals and enter the medical books". This generally takes few years but one gets saved from so many troubles. Remember ROFECOXIB? The very famous and hugely prescribed drug 2 yrs ago for pain stands completely withdrawn today. In the end one has to decide on his/her own as this is a grey area. 3. It's definitely one of those things that when you need it the cost suddenly seems worth it! It's basically like insurance, you always question why you need it until you get sick. My teenage son has a rare abdominal sarcoma and he is being prepared to undergo a stem cell transplant very soon. I cannot tell you how much I regret not saving his umbilical cord when he was born. In fact, I really try not to think too much about it since it is passed and there is nothing that I can do now. But, I remember being asked if I would like to bank his umbilical cord, hesitating abit, and than thinking . . what are the chances? Well . . guess the chances were better than I thought they'd be. I wish we had those early stem cells, but we dont. So, in a few weeks he'll have his own blood stem cells 'harvested', frozen, and than undergo high dose chemo to kill off any microscopic cancer cells . . than they'll give him back his stem cells in hopes that it will regrow a new immune system.
