  1. Cord blood from a newborn infant is rich in the stem cells that make up the bone marrow. The cells can be banked frozen and used to perform bone marrow transplants when someone has leukemia that is not responding to treatment or has immunodeficiency. The recipient's marrow is killed off with chemotherapy and when the body is free of the medicine, the cord blood is put in through an IV. The cells will make their way to the marrow and set up house keeping and start producing red and white blood cells that can make the patient healthy again. It is not 100% successful. About 50% of cord blood transplantation does not work, but if the patient is in danger of death, it is worth a try.
