  2. there shouldn't be any hematopoietic stem cells in cord blood. if they are present, the newborn could be in a state of hemolytic disease of the newborn, or may have some sort of disorder causing increased red cell destruction. i don't know about stem cells per se, but i DO know that if one of those conditions was present, and bad enough, immature red cells would be present in the baby's blood, and could be found in the cord blood. interesting question. my co-workers and i had a nice discussion about it.
