Umbilical Cord Stump?
My daughter is 2 weeks old. Her umbilical cord stump fell off a few days ago. But her "belly button" sticks out - not like an "outie" but like part of the umbilical cord is sticking out of her "button". It looks like a tree stump. The top is folded shut and I've noticed that there is a little blood (always dried by the time I see it) every time I change her. I have been using rubbing alcohol to clean the blood off...I don't want to open it up. Has anyone had this happen? This is my 3rd kid (1 with a nice innie, 1 with a funny little outie, and then this one) and I've never seen this. Thanks everyone.

- Just give it some time to heal, trust me it will soon heal completely. My sons umbilical cord didn't complely heal till a little after he was a month old. Just keep giving her spunge baths till it does completely heal and keep it clean and dry. Also keep applying alcohol to the outside, not the inside. What also helped my sons cord, is his doc. put some grey stuff on there twice. Maybe go to your daughters doc. and let her look at it.
- My daughter's cord fell off sometime during her second week, but it only about half of it fell off. We just happened to be going to the Dr. that day for something else and I showed it to her. Part of it was healed, part of it had dried blood, and part of it was still all goopy (like snot or something). She put silver nitrate on it and said it would help it heal. Now she has what I like to call an "in-betweenie" it's not really an outie, and it's not really an innie. I'm not sure if that was cause from the way her cord fell off, but it looks quite similar to her father's belly button, maybe it's genetic! But in conclusion, I think they all look different, but still normal :)
- Yes, it is completely natural, this one will take just a bit longer to go away. I had the same thing happen with two of my three daughters. And also with my grandson.
- Does it look like a granuloma? http://images.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http://www.aafp.org/afp/20020515/2067_f1.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.aafp.org/afp/20020515/2067.html&h=149&w=200&sz=10&hl=en&start=1&um=1&tbnid=EbOA_HTCN7XTOM:&tbnh=77&tbnw=104&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dumbilical%2Bcord%2Bgranuloma%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN or an umbilical cord hernia? http://hernia.tripod.com/umbilical.gif http://www.ubhtnicu.com/images/jpegs/freddiehernia.jpg Just a guess *lol*.
- My daughter is about 3 weeks old and has what sounds to be the same thing. My doctor said umbilical hernia which eventually should go away on its own. It's more common in girls they said but in her case at least they didnt suggest doing anything special so I would just ask about it next time you're at the doctor.
