Mismatched Umbilical Cord Blood Transfusion- how safe is it?

Hi, I have been struggling to find a treatment using umbilical cord blood for thalassemia disease of my cousin who is in Kolkata, India. Finally I found and got reply from reliance bio sciences that they can provide an Umbilical Cord Blood unit for 2.5 lacs, if matched unit is available. I have been analysing the medical literature where even not-fully-matching umbilical cord blood also have been given for treatment. I would like to know about the general outcome of mismatched umbilical ord blood unit treatment and the hospitals where its done in India

  1. It depends on how close the match is. Like bone marrow transplants, an exact match is preferred. However, this is often very hard to find. A closer match, but not "matched" often works fairly well. It depends on her overall health, her HLA types and the HLA types of the donor. Some mismatches are better than other mismatches. The donor matching service knows these ratios and likely outcomes. If it is emergent, and the doc recommends it, you should seriously consider it. It's all fairly tricky. Be sure to ask your doc lots of questions. Good luck.
