Are you for or against stem cell research for a cure for cancer and why?
The reason I am asking this is because I am writing a research paper for college on the topic. I am a Catholic and also conservative (normally against stem cell research) but my mother had cancer when I was younger so of course if she didn't have to go through what she did I should love the idea. I was just wondering other people's opinions as a sort of "poll" type-source, unscholarly of course.

- I am definitely for it. There's no (logical) reason not to go forward with stem-cell research, it could help so many people with everything from cancer to Parkinsons to Alzheimers.
- I am definately for research to cure cancer. Like you, I watched someone very dear to me suffer from cancer. I think that anyone who has ever had to watch anyone suffer and die from something so aweful wants to find a cure for it. Stem cell research isn't killing babies- it's taking fertilized eggs, that would otherwise be thrown out, and creating cell lines so that different effects of hormones, etc can be determined. The possibilities of stem cell research are so high right now, I think it would be foolish to not look into it. By the way, good for you for having your own beliefs. It's so easy to have political or religious beliefs and just follow the crowd. It takes guts to go against the norm of your party and stand up for what you think is right.
- I am 100% for it. My brother died of cancer, a cancer that has been shown to possibly be curable using stem cells. People will tell you it's wrong because life has to be destroyed, but cancer destroys lives that haven't fully lived, lives that are deeply loved by friend and family. Those lives are worth almost any price.
- In favor of - adult stem cells - it has shown lots of potential already and is commonly used to treat disease effectively. Against - embryonic stem cells - so far with the millions of dollars that has already gone into it - nothing very promising has come out of it. Also there is a high risk of abuse and ethics regarding this issue - not just the destruction of life argument. There is also the money trail issue and the potential to take advantage of lower income women who would be seduced to undergo potential harmful procedures for the lure of money. And is it always wise to use any means necessary to get to an end?
